I wonder if having a stroke is like tripping....
    #8454917 -

*Really* interesting lecture by a neuro-scientist who had to rebuild her brain from scratch after having a stroke. (Some of you might have seen her story reported a couple of New Scientists ago). She explains the experience in depth and from an expert's POV. Just watch, trust-

http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jilltaylor

What she describes sounds similar to the psychedelic experience in some respects. Thoughts?

Ask Trendal. He could probably give us a pretty good idea.

I would say the rebuilding your brain sounds an AWFUL lot like tripping.

But tripping doesn't imply total blood and oxygen loss to the brain. If we had an infarction every time we tripped we would have a lot more problems. The mechanical process is not similar but the healing afterwards makes sense.

End of life processes are like trippping. My mom's last days were like a persistant trip, reliving memories and talking to people who are long dead... The nurses told us to expect it, and to just go along with it.

I could imagine a serious stroke could replicate some of those reactions.

Well...

I wouldn't say that having a stroke is anything like tripping. Perhaps the confusion experienced during a stroke might be taken as the same confusion you get from psychedelics...but I think that's a bit of a stretch.

In the early stages, a stroke doesn't feel like anything. No pain, or at least too low to feel, at first. Specific brain functions (and it is different for everyone) are the first thing to go. I remember being really confused as to why my arm stopped moving the mouse around (I was on my computer). Then a wider range of functions begin to go. I was completely paralyzed on my right side by this point, and talking was getting very difficult (I kept thinking the right words, but saying the wrong ones). Still no pain. I remember getting to the hospital and a couple thing after that, but my short-term memory was going by then and wouldn't really come back for a good week.

So no, at no point during my stroke did I feel anything like a "trip".

I faint a lot and am concerned DMT would be a lot like it.

It's not pleasant. You feel this weird fuzzy electric feeling then suddenly are kind of happy (at least I am) and see a whole bunch of nonsensical blobs and weird things that you can barely make out then you wake up and are like "fuck, I fainted".

Hopefully being shot into hyperspace feels nothing like that.

Though I'm pretty sure dying, and having a stroke are similar. People who have strokes sometimes will faint a lot on that same day.

Hey lucid, do you think that psychedelic drugs have played any part in your ill mental health?

I've been following your progress for a while, Lucid. You express honest emotion - a rare trait. I hope everything turns out well for you.

By the way, how old are you?
