It has multiple meanings, depending on the context. In this context gank = steal, and yes.. people do say it in real life.
In the gaming world it refers to killing someone, usually a surprise attack or by a group of people.
But I do believe the term gank originated in reality before it became popular on teh intrawebs, as I've been hearing it since the early 90s at least.
