yea it's certainly possible. First year? eh, if your good enough to get,and keep a job. I key is to find a welder and practice till you brain bleeds. You can pick up MIG pretty quick, but I'd go for TIG if I was in your position, knowing some oxyfuel. it's a lot harder but it's oh so buttery smooth and awesome. Stainless and mild steel is real easy, Aluminum people say is hard, and it is at first, but you get used to it, it just heats, and Cools very fast, so once you start your not stopping. Cro-moly and magnesium are pretty hard as well, but you get used to them. Most schools i've encountered don't teach the latter two, or any other exotics,so be warned.

If you can do all those positions i talked about earlier , in mild,SS,and alum. Pass and X-ray test( it's pretty easy for TIG) You can see 30k a year yes. Good luck, and enjoy it, it's a pretty fun job, or career with a million opportunities. I'm not the end all be all when it comes to welding, but I take pride in my work, and iv'e tried to learn as much as i can. Feel free to ask anything else later on if you need some insider advice.

It's no problem at all. Like i said, I take a lot of pride in my work, and with this new job building race chassis, I'm finally on my way to living a dream. If your teacher is half decent( Welding teachers are notoriously bad) and if you are really determined, you'll be just fine. Lots of those classes people just sit around and bullshit, don't get caught up in it, a TIG machine is gonna cost a Good $3000 and a decent MIG $500+ So use them all you can. Don't do just flat position. Every so often switch it up and Try and overhead or Vertical Up or Vertical down.

I've known guys that have taken the same class 2-3 or even 4 times just to get enough experience in, granted those were with horrible teachers that didn't do a damn thing. They also had a Hope grant in GA,and retaking classes was free. So you can see why he'd do it, but if you can,and feel it necessary go for it. The more time behind a welder the better you will get,and in the end the more you will get paid and the more you will enjoy your work doing all kinds of wild jobs.

** Oh and get an Auto-darkening Hood You can get Cheap ones to last a year or two for like 60 Bucks( Don't get suckered into a speedglas or something, it's like a whole new rhelm in easiness. I can't even describe it to you. When i First Got one i nearly shit my pants. This is a cheap Redtail auto i got for like 70 bucks of CL. it's lasted me a over a year of daily use.

I made 36k last year before overtime, rarely even picked up a
welding lead unless it was to show someone something or to fab a
tool for some shit I needed or set up a jig for someone else, the
funny thing is my first run with aluminum looked better than a guy
with 20 years under his belt, he had 2 guys wire brushing the
smoke and splatter from his work, mine wiped clean with my glove

Spatter with alum? I've never had aluminum anything more than a wipe clean either, and I'll admit I'm not a pro with it, but I get the job done. Your not talking about Doing Aluminum With a MIG are you? Haven't ever had a chance to try that out. Don't really care to either.

Were you Not a machinist or something? It just seems pretty common for people to think they can go out and get 30-40 bucks and hour "welding"(just like everyone talking about underwater death welding). I don't know many Guys getting that kinda pay, that aren't working in high dollar shops or some such.

it was MIG. the guy tried blaming the metal saying it was a
weird alloy and that it wasnt good quality and that his rig was
acting all fucked up... I said 'lemme see if I can help', I
grabbed a couple scraps and ran a bead, I'll try and find the
pics, his work looked like turds and black soot

I did some of everything, a little machining, forming, ran most of the equipment that confused everyone else like the plasma table, also did the maintenance on everything...
