I'm a Tig welder. You can make good money. Just depends on where you are and what Industry you get into. 15hr is pretty standard. You can get a lot less and a lot more.

TIG is not simple. Any monkey can do MIG,and you can gets jobs all over for it, but you wont make the money.

I warn you, taking classes for welding aren't worth a damn, except giving you a welder to use and some scrap to practice on. Most places will tell you to forget everything you learned in school, and teach you there way. So take what you learn with a grain of salt. Don't Fuck with underwater, yea you get paid well, but you have do have a billion certifications, and if you get a bubble explosion you will die...period. If you lazy and just want a job learn MIG, Flat, horizontal, and Most importantly Vertical up,and Vertical down welds. If your going to Do TIG learn all those plus every other conceivable way to operate that foot pedal and contort yourself in somewhere, as well as blind welding. Blind TIG is the hardest thing in the world, while with MIG is as easy as pie.

You wont Go blind. I've got buds that have welded for like 30 years and see just fine. The worst i've seen was a guy i knew who welds headers for prostreet cars and resto work on Bi planes and shit, had to wear Bifocals under His hood, which some people do without needing them anyways.

You can make good money, but don't expect it to come fast,or easy. I'm about to land my dream Job building Drag car chassis. I wont be getting paid shit compared to what I'm getting now, but it's a dream job,and after time i should be able to go to just about any standard race team and have a good chance at a job.

I could go on longer, but I've been drinking and getting fucked up since i got off work, and finally just got home.

Drug test are standard. 70% or more are Up front and thats it(I've met tons of Coworkers that were tweakers or potheads). Background checks are standard as well. once again, there's a difference. If you go stick or MIG things are a lot less lax,and you'll see less drug test and more drug users. TIG is more precision based, special metals and alloys and much higher tolerances. Therefor all of the above is more of a factor.

Most are 21 and up too, if thats a problem for you.

lol when i saw this i wanted to mention underwater wielding too.
i knew a kid that did it once he only had to work 2-3 months a year and he had a shit ton of money. supposedly its very dangerous though.

they get payed up to 200-300 PER HOUR.

the problem with welding isn't going blind, its the metal fumes will fuck you up if you're not constantly attentive to having proper ventilation.

I've taken a number of supplemental classes, but nothing serious. If you go Factory you can just dig right in(usually). if you go Contruction, you'll make a bit more usually, bit you have to go though new certifications all the time. it's a big fucking bitch and I don't' recommend it. You can't imagine how many guys out there have been welding for 30 years and are required to go back( or for the first time) to school, or a supplemental to relearn some bullshit specific way ocsha or someone else wants it done. It's for good reason but those dudes fucking hate it.

You can make a good living, expect to work hard for it, just like any other industrial job really, but i enjoy it, you are physically rewarded for your toil. I really enjoy it most for where it can take me. As you get better and what not you can basically go anywhere in the world, any industry, any location, welding is worldwide. You can have lots of fun doing high construction and stuff( if you wanna jump through the Hoops of Certs.)

Oxyfuel welding is a great overall process. It's all there was for however many years, it's super functional, super Versatile, and produces great results. On the other hand you will not Find a job in Oxyfuel. Really down and dirty gritty work will be stick, which sucks, bad. MIG is probally like 70% or more of welding. It's super simple, just pull the trigger and go. TIG is like Oxyfuel in that you manually put the fillermetal in the weld pool, but instead of a real fire torch you use an electrical "torch" to strike and arc. You control the power of the arc with a foot pedal.

With MIG you basically pull the trigger and go, but TIG you have to control the torch with one hand, filler with the other, your foot is controlling the power. All the while your watching the weld pool, watching penetration, watching for oxidation, porosity, and a few other randoms. At first it seems impossible, but as you get more comfortable and shit, it goes from like 8-9 things to like 5 ,and less and less as time goes.
