I think its awful pretentious to correct someone

If someone posts some incorrect information that doesn't really affect the whole thread I don't think anyone should correct it.

Sometimes I just make mistakes I know people can correct just to see if they're pretentious enough to correct me in the middle of a conversation.

If it's a simple spelling mistake, then I agree with you - that doesn't need to be corrected. If we're talking facts here, and people are spouting misinformation, then I think it is perfectly acceptable to correct that misinformation. There is too much bullshit on the internet to allow more of it to manifest in the simple minds of impressionable young people (see: M & P and the plethora of completely retarded alien theories, DMT flashes, 2012, etc etc).

I would rather be corrected than continue to believe and spread misinformation of any sort. I feel sorry for you if you feel differently.

I think it's pretty important to correct a person's grammar or spelling.

Language skills are in decline in America and we lose these skills only at great detriment to ourselves. It may seem silly to tell people which form of "Their/There/They're" to use, or whether they mean too much or to go or two people. But keep in mind that it is a slippery slope from the poor positioning of possessive pronouns to the unintelligible idiocy that is American "Ebonics".

This is what we seek to prevent with our corrections.

Misinformation should be corrected.

With the invention of spellcheck I have given up on humans learning correct spelling. They'll never bother.
