Is smoking ganja considered a sin by most religions? (obviously excluding the Rastafarian movement.)

i think in islam and buddhism it is considered bad to put intoxicants in your body, and christianity as well.

This has been one of the tougher calls for me as a Christian. I view the herb as a medicine, and I think there's a whole boatload of people who should be on it. :rasta:

For myself, however, I just get high, so for me, since I view it as falling short for myself, then yeah, for me it's a sin (which is simply missing the mark) which sucks sometimes, but I'm not 21 anymore and personally, I can't smoke just once a month, I loves me the herb!! So that's my isolated case.

But I think that the argument could be made that unless your conscience is telling you to get off of it, and it's not effecting others in a negative light, nor reducing your ability to love others (for most people it seems to INCREASE their lovingness) then how can it be a sin??

Abuse of anything isn't good, but God did make it after all.

And man, is it not one of the most beautiful looking and smelling plants of them all?? :crazy2:

Okay, those that are more pedantic can quote you scripture, but I know for a fact that in the bible/old testament there are verses about all plants being there by god for man to use as he sees fit. Buddhists have used cannabis and hashish for countless generations in their meditations, and Hashish itself is an Arabic word. I doubt the Qu'ran badmouths it.

What do we mean by most religions? Nearly all religions I know have a form of ritualistic drug taking. Christianity may be symbolic with the alcohol, but it's still there. And Islam is a call to arms. People don't fight better when high.

All ancient religions were based in psychedelic drug use, Cannabis is mentioned in the bible as the holy anointing oil. In the bible the oil that Jesus was supposed to be anointed with (I prefer to believe he is a metaphor for the oil, walking on water anyone?) has pounds of the flowering tops of cannabis plants in the recipe. Jesus is the symbol for the entheogen, the Amanita Muscaria more than anything else though.

But for your question, who cares if some religion says it is a sin, your own values should be the only thing that matters.

The only reason it would be considered a "sin" is that most religions have been twisted and corrupted in the past thousand years and especially the past 100. The war on drugs have moved into religion, and whereas most religions may have roots in many psychedelic drugs, (like christmas and the amanita muscaria.. which almost all modern christians would have no idea what I'm talking about)... they have long since forgotten, and even though cannabis and mushrooms are mentioned in the bible and many other holy texts as a sacrament, many modern religions are too blinded by dogma and propaganda to see anything very clearly at all. So yes, most would consider it a sin, however they are severely misguided.

And as the person above me stated, who cares what religions think. Your own personal values should be the ONLY indicator. Religions have been telling people what to think and how to believe and who to kill for far too long now. Think for yourself.

I haven't studied alot of other religions but as for Christianity I really think the only way it would apply is because it's illegal. Obviously if you're Christian you have to believe God made it. It would fall under following the laws of the land you live in.

I went to Catholic high school, and I asked a couple priests if smoking marijuana was sinful. They said that anything in moderation was ok, but to abuse it was sinful. Guess it depends on how you define 'moderation'.

That's not the religion I know. The way I understand it I'm just not supposed to let anything control me or get wasted.

But you don't need religion to tell you that. Common sense suggests the same thing.
