Help me with my antidepressant essay

I am fighting through a tough period of depression right now and I decided to write about antidepressants for my final paper in written and oral communication. I plan on arguing against the use of antidepressants to cure depression.

So far my main points are:
They can raise suicidal tendencies.
There are extreme side affects.
Antidepressants cause you to forget about your problems rather than addressing and fixing them.
Not enough information about the long term effects.

Would you take out any of these points or add anything else. Thanks for the help guys!

If I were writing the paper, it would go something like this:

"Anti-depressants should only be used in severe cases of depression. A much more practical and beneficial approach to treating depression is examining the underlying psychological causes."

I don't think anti-depressants are a black & white issue which can be labeled as bad or good. They have their place in time. Definitely not my first pick for treating depression, but someone who isn't able to get out of bed, is contemplating suicide, then yeah they definitely need to be on them.

I was thinking about separating those issues at the beginning by showing how much antidepressants are overprescribed and saying that for severe cases they can be beneficial, but for the most part they are not the best option for the following reasons, and then go on to explain my arguments.

I was going to argue that natural methods are more effective than antidepressants, but there would just be so much information, too much to include in this paper considering the length and I am afraid that the argument might feel too loose and not focused enough. My teacher tends to like very specific topics as he believes that it helps to strengthen the argument.

I was thinking about just arguing for the use of natural methods, but I think that it will be eaisier to prove my arguments with solid facts by arguing against antidepressants.

I am actually researching natural alternatives though. I plan on talking to my psychiatrist soon to get off antidepressants and try sometihng more natural as these pills just make my condition worse (I have seriously considered suicide a huge amount of times during my time on effexor).

It's just basically tryptophan, as far as I've read... converts to serotonin in the body...

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of tampering with the serotonin levels of my brain with some shit you buy over the counter. I tried it one time and within 24 hours I was experiencing dissociation and mild psychosis. I have, however, had success with SSRIs, though I no longer use either.

ssri's ruin people's decades and lives. IMO, this is never an option and they should all be banned. They just make the kids not care anymore. and don't even get me started on all that ADD medication.

Im kind of unsure about messing with the chemical balances in my brain as well. In two weeks when school is out I am going to talk to my doc to get off of these drugs and go for natural methods. I dont want to use chemicals and I plan on starting meditation or something of the sort. I think one of the problems is that I have a negative outlook which depresses me. I want to get some help and change my outlook on life to get out of this funk. But I will post asking for some help with that matter later, as I am too busy at the moment to get into that. Hopefully I can heal myself over the summer and get my normal life back instead of feeling suicidal every day.

Most depressed people don't really have any real problems other than the fact that theyre depressed about everything. I can see how this argument can work when you're depressed about losing a loved one or something along those lines.. Its just hard to 'fix' general depression without some sort of medication.

How do you fix that? Trying to keep a positive outlook when you feel nothing matters is kind of hard.

I know what you mean. Most of the time I dont give a shit about anything and I just want to end my life. I really dont know why I feel this way, but I dont think that it is a biochemical imbalance that will be fixed with drugs. I think that meditation, deep thought, and psychadelics may give me some insight to the source of the problems. I want to fix my problems, not have drugs make me forget about them.

And about that comment about paxil making you pecker shrink, Effexor has killed my sex drive, but even when I am feeelign it it is impossible to get an orgasm. Plus I have lost my appetite and get by on about one meal per day, which surely cant help matters, but a lot of the time I just feel naseuos when I try to make myself eat. I also have problems with insomnia. Then I think these are causing problems with my concentration which makes me feel like an idiot and I just feel really depresessed. Ive also got anxiety and it I feel really uncomfortable around people. *sigh* Such a complicated situation but I suppose I will get through it eventually
