Planning on quitting Effexor, weed and booze next week.

Its been in my calendar for 2 months now. I've actually managed to look forward to it!
Effexor is a fucking bitch. It has now been linked to increased craving for alcohol (I can totally agree). Plus the withdrawals are fuckin horrible. I'm down to the smallest dose (37.5mg)
Booze, well... Its gonna suck, I love having a few beers. But ever since i've been taking that effexor shit, I've been drinking way too much. Good riddance
Weed, sigh . I figured if i'm gonna go through hell getting sober, I'd rather go through it only once and quit everything at once.
I was thinking of wrting a getting sober thread and updating it every day.
Would anyone read that?

Yeah I would read your thread. Getting sober sucks and you will always be that same person that loves drugs but your life really does get better when you are sober. You start to do things to improve your life and yourself because you don't know what else to do. Good luck.

I've always heard from rehab'ers... studies show that quitting is a lot more successful if you just try to quit one substance at a time. Like if you're trying to quit alcohol or whatever, they almost encourage you not to quit cigs at the same time; I guess that otherwise, when you slip up and smoke a cig, you'll justify having a drink with the fact that you already slipped up.
Trying to quit booze and weed sounds like a long and sober road. What's wrong with a little weed?
Good job getting off the SSRIs. I always hated how they made me feel; it doesn't really seem like a cure for depression so much as a dulling/zombifying of everything human about you.

Actually, weed will be my go to drug if I really, REALLY can't handle it.
Its the effexor and booze I really want to stop.
I'll see how it goes. I did manage to quit booze weed and caffeine all at the same time for about a month. I know what went wrong and why I started again. I'm going to avoid that same situation again.
I'm really prepared this time. I need to get my shit together

Effexor may have the fucking most unholy of hellish body withdrawals, if you cold turkey it. your body really craves the serotonin and NE that effexor makes plentiful...

You should not go cold turkey off of that much Effexor. I would taper down from that dose over a period of 3 months or so to minimize problems. I know that is not what you want to hear but Effexor withdrawal is hellacious and will make quitting other drugs that much harder. I experienced brain zaps, extreme insomnia, vertigo, and other wonderful side effects after ceasing Effexor. I tapered down from 150 mg to 0 over a period of nearly a year.

37.5mg is the smallest dose of Effexor, I've been taking it for 2 months now.
Next (and last remaining step) is to quit completely.

Like a few of the guys before me, I also highly recommend tapering down the effexor. I was on Paxil CR for years and the withdrawal was just horrible. I really don't think you want to put your body through all this at once.
I can see that your heart is obviously in the right place, though. It's a huge step to quit anything- let alone three substances at once.
What exactly were you on Effexor for? General depression? Anxiety? Sleep issues? The reason I ask is because in many circumstances quitting an SSRI (or MAOI), especially cold-turkey can increase suicidal thoughts or tendencies and we don't want that.
Good luck!
Also, I would read the thread if you created it, but I think you just did, anyway.

Second line of the OP makes it pretty clear that he has tapered his dose...

I've been taking another SSRI to counteract the effexor withdrawal. I still need the SSRI, I just don't want Effexor.
I got it for general depression at first, turns out that bi-polar meds works much better for me. therefore, bye bye Effexor.

Ah, I see. I've been on just about every type of SSRI known to man, but never Effexor. Several of my friends experienced horrible side effects from taking it. (Nightmares, sweats, overall zombification, etc..)
It takes guts to even decide to quit any addiction. Beginning the process is half the chore.

I'd read your thread. Maybe now I see why I drink so much; didn't know that about Effexor. I'd suggest opening the capsule and taking out a few of those little grains inside, so you can wean yourself slowly. Continue to take more out as you go along.
