psilocybin under a microscope

I was looking into buying a microscope. I was thinking about getting a pretty good one. I was looking at a couple of different ones and some were higher powered then others.


I have searched the webbernets to no avail. I know that spores can be seen at a magnification of only 400X or so. I was wondering if anyone knew the magic sweet spot was fpr dialing in psilocybin.

I know that you can identify some mushrooms with their spore print under the microscope. I was wondering if I found a species in the wild if I took a cross section and dissected a small piece and mounted it on a slide, could I be able to see the psilocybin in that said tissue if indeed it did contain said chemical? At what magnification would you be able to visibly see it?

I am asking because I am wanting to know if it would be worth it to buy a microscope at say 1000X or 1500X, or to just buy a cheap one and see just the spores. I don't have the money to buy a scanning electron microscope of course. So if they magnification required is too immense...then it would be more economical to buy a cheaper one.

No, you really can't see Psilocybin...It's like trying to see hydrogen in water...

Thank you sir. So I guess a run of the mill will suffice. Any suggestions on your favorite microscopes or special features that you find helpful. I have been looking at a few as I had said and was wondering if there were any special features that would be worth splurging a little on.

yeah, i thought molecules could only be seen with an electron microscope/graph. that would be pretty liberating to be able to see that far in my microscope. the lenses on mine are 4x, 10x, 40x. that's standard. where did you get 400x from? that would be nice. you can see spores at 4x and then zoom in by pinpointing on one or a group.

Microscopes are good fun.

If you want to find out if a shrooms got psilocybin in it there are tests available from the same people that make the E test kits.

My husband is a microbiologist, I can ask his opinion on microscopes if you like. Although he's used to using expensive equipment.

Well I bet if you're ready to put a lot on money on the microscope to do the seeing, you can get the right scope to do it.

No, because visible light is far too large to resolve structures as small as even a virus...which itself is far larger than one molecule, let alone an atom.

Visible light falls within the range of 10^-6 and 10^-7....while atoms are measured on the scale of 10^-12.

You can't "see" atoms, because the human eye can't view the wavelengths needed to see an atom.

400x is the total highest resolving power of most standard microscopes. The objective is 40x and the lens in the eyepiece is 10x... so 40*10= 400.

The highest magnification you can reach with standard light microscopy is around 600x. To do 1000x to 1500x you have to do oil immersion.

To the OP: seeing chemical compounds is impossible for the lay person. You have to have a scanning tunneling electron microscope, which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions. Not to mention they are incredibly hard to use.

Thats really splitting hairs though. A computer can render an image for you and you can see it just fine. The computer doesnt do any 'seeing', only a person can do that.

So do you think I should spring for a trinocular for the later possibility to add a camera if I want to?

Do you like binocular or monocular better?

What kind of light source is best in your opinions? Halogen etc.
