Mycology/Microscopy Questions

Being my first post, I thought I'd add a short intro. I have been reading about/studying mushrooms lightly in my spare time for about a year and have come across a lot of wonderful information at this site. I ended up with a few questions unanswered and somewhat of a request, as follows.

One question is: When creating an environment to grow mushrooms, of any type, what is the goal? It seems to me that heat is used to control growth stages, lights/fans/humidifiers are to copy natures ideal conditions, and everything else is an attempt to keep clean/contam free in such an ideal growth environment, am I fairly close with this assumption?

Another question is: Do the spores of 'active' mushrooms have any common characteristics, or is it possible for the spores of two strains (specifically inactive and active) to look the same? What about poisonous ones? I have not had a chance to compare these and have been very interested in these ideas.

Lastly, I have learned that in my area sales, trading, purchasing, etc of 'active' strains of mushroom spores may be a bit less than legal. I have also found it very difficult to find poisonous mushroom spores, it seems that people don't like things that can kill them. My interest in studying one or some of the more common 'active' strains  has lead me here. These strains are not native to my area, so I was wondering if someone could PM me information regarding possible procurement of said spores for studying purposes. If not, I understand.

Well I have seen the sponsors, and I would gladly pay for sample specimen, it is the legality issue that I was concerned with. I was hoping a PM would come through or a hint, as I assumed about someone that was willing to overlook that.

Answer:  Yes.  Many cultivators miss the obvious when attempting a grow.  The more you simulate natural conditions, albeit sometimes sans competitive microflora, the better your chances will be.  At least that's what I heard.

Though unlikely, the spores of two different species, not strains, active/inactive may be identical.  Active mushrooms are found in many different genera (plural of genus).  Since that is the case, they may vary wildly in the way they look under the microscope.  It is somewhat possible that a poisonous mushroom's spores to look somewhat like a non-poisonous, or inactive, mushroom's.

3)  My interest in studying one or some of the more common 'active' strains  has lead me here. These strains are not native to my area....

One of the most active species is Panaeolus subbalteatus, which is found, literally, all over the world.  They probably grow in your area either in horse poo or on lawns.  Do they have horses or lawns near where you live?

I have cows, horses, and lawns, and I have heard that pan subbs are likely the only species I would ever find here, but I have had no luck so far. There has been rain and cold weather lately, highs of ~62 with about 60% humidity. Anything that specifically likes this weather? I plan to go hunting today and tomorrow, I will report back with anything I find.

I believe I see your issue and I appreciate your tackt in
handling it, as Senior Hongos mentions Pan Subs are pretty
common, my advice is if your not in an arid region to get out
and look, find a few and produce your own prints, agar work
is pretty simple it just requires a few extra tools

I have found subbs in weather exactly like that in a lawn at a park.

I believe I see your issue and I appreciate your tackt in
handling it, as Senior Hongos mentions Pan Subs are pretty

No luck so far.... Tomorrow is another day.


UPDATE: No luck today either. I can't find any places that have green grass that is not mowed every day. I hate my area, maybe next week I will take a trip to a better environment (hour or so out) If the weather gets better. It was hot by noon yesterday and today. Probably not ideal...
