HT - Decriminalized means it's legal under certain circumstances

can you think of a certain circumstance?

your argument is a little fragmented and lacks some meat. Prohibition was repealed for two reasons. One was that people didnt want alcohol to be illegal. Two (which is what won the votes of many of those those who still wanted prohibition) was that it had made the mafia into a very rich monster which became one of the largest threats to public safety in the history of many large american cities.

Sadly pot is looked down upon by an equal if not greater amount of people than there are who favor it. And there's no blatantly obvious secondary reason present to convince the feeble minded to vote for legalization, who will remain mired in the dogma until such a reason arises.

I'm not trying to be a downer. I sure as hell see good reasons for legalization, and I'd like to have it, but realism would suggest that it's highly unlikely in this country, at least not without some significant societal changes that only time and effort can bring about.

What the fuck does that have to do with me being wrong? You didn't provide me any evidence backing YOU up. You actually gave info suggesting I'M right.

de?crim?i?nal?ize (d-krm-n-lz)
tr.v. de?crim?i?nal?ized, de?crim?i?nal?iz?ing, de?crim?i?nal?iz?es

To reduce or abolish criminal penalties for: decriminalize the use of marijuana.

it's legal under no circumstances, just diminished penalties

and it's decriminalized in California

you were wrong on both of those, I gave you a reference to prove it to yourself. You're definition of de?crim?i?nal?ized is exactly why you're wrong. In no way is it legal, there aren't CRIMINAL penalties for it, they are CIVIL penalties instead.

OK, so it's decriminalized on the local level?

it's decriminalize on several state levels and on several city levels. Now it is also legal on one city level. It's still illegal under every state and federal level. Legal and decriminalized are different.

Yeah, I understand that. That's why when people said legalized, I said decriminalized.

But I guess decriminalized is wrong too.

I lived in Denver awhile ago while they were trying to get signatures for a petition for this, as well as saying that alcohol was way worse than pot. Even at that time people would smoke weed in the city park and I never saw a bike cop or regular cop arrest or hand out citations to them.
I like what the state of Washington did about putting marijuana as one of the lowest enforcable laws as a priority for it's police force. They put burglary, rape, assault, etc., way above it which isn't as good as legalization but it's still going in the right direction.

Denver now has that law as well.

Quote:
Shall the voters for the City and County of Denver adopt an ordinance to the Denver Revised Municipal Code that would make the private use and possession of marijuana by persons 21 years of age and older the City’s lowest law-enforcement priority?

Which won 57%-43%.

I'm not sure I understand the whole decriminalized vs. legalized concept. What is the difference? Is it just a matter of federal regulation?

It's legal in Denver COUNTY. But the pigs will still bust your ass under Colorado STATE law. That's legalization.

Decriminalization is dropping possible charges down to a charge as bad as a speeding ticket and confiscation up to a certain amount on hand.

And then as I said before, Denver has also passed laws to make it the police's lowest law-enforcement priority. Which means it really boils down to how nice the piggy is feeling that day? I've heard good and bad stories regarding this...
