Denver Legalizes Marijuana

Has everyone else heard about this?  I just found out the other day.  http://www.mapinc.org/newsnorml/v05/n1723/a01.html

Apparently, the law is obsolete anyway, but I still think its a step in the right direction.  :stoned: What does everyone else think?

Every person who consumes marijuana will think it is a "step in the right direction."

Regardless, it is just a gesture. Colorado state law trumps Denver's city laws so it doesn't do shit. It is just another city standing up and shouting "fuck the drug war" into a vast emptiness of ignorance and stupidity.

State law only trumps city law if city police decides to follow the state law instead of the city law. I don't think it does NOTHING, but it is a shame that 54% of Denver citizens will not have their voice heard.

The Denver city police prosecuted 98% of marijuana cases last year under state, not city, law. This coming year that percentage will be 100. Doesn't take a math major to realize this law did nothing practical, it is only a statement of defiance.

In my experience weed is already pretty much legal here in Colorado anyway. :gethigh:

Of course that doesn't jibe with that previous post about state prosecution, but you don't have to worry about being prosecuted if they don't arrest you in the first place.

Of course 100 percent of cases will be charged under state law, there is not city law against it now (doesn't take a math major to figure that out either). The real question is, will the actual number of people being charged for possession decrease.

Ythan - you're talking about the People's Republic of Boulder. That place might as well be its own country, laws out there are optional anyway. Of course I'm kidding. I love Boulder, I'm a Colorado native.

Unless Denver police departments are specifically ordered to treat marijuana "crimes" as their lowest priority then it is preposterous to think that possession charges will decrease in and around Denver.

I don't know if it's preposterous, stranger things have happened. Even an ordinance directing police to treat pot as a low priority doesn't ensure compliance. When you get right down to it, it depends on the officer you encounter. The hardliners are going to get you until it's completely legal.
