need ID on shrooms found in SF area

i know its late in the season but we just had a few light showers and i found some mushrooms that looked kind of like Psilocybe Semilanceata to me. however, i havent observed any blue bruising and the tips of the caps dont have the pointy nipple shape that is usually seen on liberty caps. anybody know what these are?


habitat: shady dark moist grass
gills:brown
stem:light brown
cap: about 1.5-3 cm diameter and varying in darkness
spore print color: dark brown/ black
bruising: non observed in 24 hrs
location: not too far from SF, CA

Libs in this time of the year near Frisco? Nah, fat chance. The absence of an umbo supports that statement.

The pics work fine now, thanks. These don't look like liberty caps at all to me. Have you ever found liberty caps? The differences are eay to see: cap coloration, lack of an umbo and stem appearance (too thick), coloration (too opaque) and texture (too fibrous). I'd say these are in the psathyrella genus, although I couldn't venture a guess as to the species.

They look like Panaeolina foensecii to me. I guess there's a slight chance they are Panaeolus subbalteatus. So the print did have brown in it, how about any purple?

They could very well be panaeolus, you're right. Panaeolus would have been my first guess, but I swung to psathyrella due to the appearance of the caps in pic 3 and the appearance of the stems, although they don't look fibrous enough for psathyrella on further inspection.

I was thinking some sort of Panaeolus maybe subbs? Caps are to pointy... spore print all of them

no i've never found liberty caps. actually these are the first shrooms i've picked.

One thing that stands out, and eliminates Psathyrella in my mind, is the way in which the drier caps are cracking in a manner I see in Panaeolus and Panaeolina.:)

Cap appearance does fit panaeolus, I agree.

@adam: that explains it, keep looking around. But don't expect to find any libs in this time of the year in your area, they are mostly an autumn species that fruits when temperatures drop to ca. 5C/40F.

Upon closer inspection, I'm almost positive they're Panaeolina foensecii. Look in similar lawns to where you found these, for Panaeolus subbalteatus, a very similar, but active mushroom.

subbs will have a jet black spore print, foes will turn out dark, but distinctly brown.

Its either Panaeolus foenisecii or Panaeolus subbalteatus. At first I thought Psathyrella but then I saw the cracking on the cap, indicating a cellular cap cuticle. (thanks Toxicman!)

I think its Panaeolus subbalteatus, the print looks jet black to me and the stems are slightly reddish and thicker than most pan foes.

The gills of most of them look like pan foe gills, but those are young specimens and a few of them are starting to open up and look more like subbalteatus.

yes alan, you are correct that they are young. i left many of them growing on the lawn hoping that they would have more time to mature, but i'm afraid the neighbor's lawnmower will get to them soon. from my understanding (i'm a novice at this) foenisecii is neither active or poisonous, and subbalteatus is psychoactive.
and if that is true would in then be safe to determine what species it is by sampling a few??

You probably won't be able to tell by sampling just a few. Is the print jet black or is there brown in it too?
