ID?, East Tennessee area
    #785322 - 07/29/02 09:52 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I live in East Tennessee and the late summer here is very humid and warm. It has been raining sparatically here the past week. I found these in a pasture/field and there were many of them growing (all of the same type). Most of them were growing right out of crap, some around. The caps are very wet and flimsy the majority of them are between a dime and quarter in diameter, some acually larger. The caps are tan in color and have a darker browinish tip. The caps are angled down as seen in the pictures (esp pic 2). The stems are very flimsy and light tan/white. They fall apart really easy. No bluing has occured yet and they have been sitting for about 1 1/2 hrs. I will post more information as needed or when I get some more - any IDs will help !
(Sorry about the crappy image quality, it is all I had at the time)

They resemble Conocybe tenera. The two species of Conocybe which contain psilocybin both have stems which will bruise blue fairly conspicuously. If you haven't seen *obvious* blueing of the stems (be very sure), then you don't have what you're looking for. Conocybe is a bad genus to experiment in because some species contain amatoxins (which is what makes the deadly Amanitas deadly).

Happy mushrooming!
