That sure looks like Coprinus micaceus, a very common edible mushroom. To verify, look (with a magnifier, if possible) at the surface fo the cap. There should be some tiny, mica-like (like glitter, sort of) particles on it.

You should only eat them while they're young and the gills are still white. After that they become nasty.

Happy mushrooming!

yup, definately some tiny glittery shit on it. by "they become nasty" are you saying they taste bad or make you sick?

by the time the begin to sporulate [produce spores], they start to deliquess [turn into nasty black goo] nd don't taste good. you ca get food poisoning from deliquessant mushrooms aswell. you will be able to tell when they have begun to sporulate when they gills start to become black.

they are good when immature and fresh.

As far as I know they just taste really bad. I don't know anybody who ever ate any amount of them once they started turning.

Even fresh, they're not very strong tasting. They're good fried in butter with a little garlic (what isn't?). If you water the area you should get more of them.

Also, check around your neighborhood - there are probably a bunch more of them coming up. When they start coming up you can often find them everywhere.

Happy mushrooming!

thanks for the responses. i tried a small, fingernail sized peice of the cap of both an immature one (white gills) and a mature one. the immature one didnt taste like much at all, the mature one was similar but kind of gritty. i didnt really notice an odor with either.

in the future; don't ever eat a field find at least untill the id has been confirmed by at least two recomended identifiers. this time you where rather safe, but next time you might not.

yes Coprinus micaceus. does it contain any chemicals that react negatively with alcohol? and what are these chemicals (of especially shaggy mane etc)?

concretefeet - I've never noticed the odor especially, but I haven't picked this species in many years. The next ones I see I will check out.

i am thinking the substrate may fe a factor. at least the first time i noticed this they where growing from the roots of a sickly bush. i believe it was one of the many bushes in the area who's flowers smell noxious. i collected a whole large bowl of them, washed them and then i started to notice. i set them outside for about an hour and they where just fine after.
