Barack Obama calls for Cesar Chavez holiday

That's what Barack Obama is endorsing: A national holiday in honor of the late, legendary activist for farmworker rights (pictured below).

Obama, who has struggled to overcome Clinton's significant advantage among Latino voters in state after state, sought to one-up his rival for the Democratic presidential nod by joining the call for creating a national holiday to commemorate the father of the United Farm Workers.

"As farmworkers and laborers across America continue to struggle for fair treatment and fair wages, we find strength in what Cesar Chavez accomplished so many years ago,''

"And we should honor him for what he's taught us about making America a stronger, more just, and more prosperous nation.

"That's why I support the call to make Cesar Chavez's birthday a national holiday.

Well, they took Lincoln's holiday away... Seems odd to have a Cesar Chavez holiday when we dont even have a holiday for the great emancipator.

I didnt, school here doesnt observe President's Day.  Thats not Lincoln's day anyway...  They took away Lincoln, and Washington's day and made a generic President's Day.  If anybody should get a 'day' it should be them.

edit - It doesnt matter anyway.  Its not gonna happen.  Its only posturing and pandering to certain blocks of voters.  Its amazing how many wild things get said in a campaign, and how often none of it gets done.  Oh well, good for me because I dont want to see wild things get done.    :wexican:

If Lincoln should have "Lincoln Day" AND President's Day, should Cesar Chavez get "Cesar Chavez" day AND "Farm-Workers Rights Advocate Day"?

No.  There should not be a chavez day or a farm rights advocate day.  If anybody deserves a day, it should be lincoln or maybe washingtion.  They had national holidays for them once, no longer however.

Like I said in my edit above, there wont be a chavez or farm workers day.  Also there wont be a lincoln day (unfortunately), just whack ass presidents day (that doest even get observed here).  The whole I idea of having a 'day' is a little funny, especially if you keep adding more and more every generation.  Eventually you have to start getting rid of old ones (like I was complaining about).

I hope the latino voters who get swayed by this dont hold their breath for a chavez day.

In general, adding an extra holiday reduces the GDP of the country for the year because a work day is gone. It doesn't sound like much, but can add up quickly when you start following the cascading effect.
