Good Soul-Funk or Folk Jazz?
    #8215725 -

I'm looking for some soul-funk, but it's been fruitless.

What I like is Nina Simone's more funkish "Save Me", "It Be's That Way Sometimes" or more folkish "Little Liza Jane", or "Real Real".

So I tried Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Dinah Washington as all directed by last.fm but I wasn't interested.

What should I be looking for? I've been looking at some Harlem choir-esque stuff too but most of it loses it's shine by becoming too cheesy or losing its vibe.

And yes, I like afrobeats but have been kind of stuck at Fela Kuti and AAO. Tony Allen wasn't very interesting IMO.

Can you post some examples (upload a song or two or post some YouTube videos) of what you're looking for?

Fela Kuti is tops.

Soul funk is sort of a tough genre...it could mean a lot of different things.

Here's some names and albums that come to mind...

King Sunny Ade
Herbie Hancock - Man Child, Head Hunters
Reuben Wilson - Blue Mode (?)
Stanley Turrentine - Sugar

I don't even know what I'd say about Folk Jazz...here's something to consider:

David Grisman - Old and In the Way, The Pizza Tapes
