we should all do it.  whether or not you think it's gonna save the planet, at least be a part of something big.  i think the creators of this idea know it's not gonna save the freakin planet.  it is just a symbolic gesture for a greater idea.  don't be so closed minded to the idea and just give it a shot.  i think it will be cool just to kill the lights, light some candles, and eat a few of my specially prepared chocolates.  hell i might leave em off all night.......until law and order comes on at 12.:awesome:

I didn't know so many want to see our planet fucked over.

It's really a choice of what kind of conditions you want to live in.  Wanna live in a shithole, or a well-kept, healthy environment?  I mean, I know that's both extremes when we're dealing with a tiny ass issue like Earth Hour, but even still, any conservation is good conservation.

Whether or not you believe in global warming, how could you possibly take issue with the idea of conservation in general?

Cause this idea won't save anything.
Virtually everyone on the planet turns their lights off when they go to bed any way.
So why bother turning the lights off for an hour?

Makes as much sense to me as the "don't buy gas for a day" gimmick.

If you really want to be "conservative" there are far better ways of doing it than turning your lights off for an hour.

Lights off for one hour isn't going to save the world. And it makes me laugh to know that some humans think we can just miraciously take control of the temperature and atmosphere.
Btw, I turn my lights off when I go to bed, for about 9 hours.
The Earth will be fine... humans on the other hand might not survive the changes.

I'll second that QFT!

It's not the planet that needs saving, it's humans. This planet has been around for billions of years. If it deems that the correct course of action is to create an environment to rid herself of us then she will do it.

And one hour? That's a pussy symbolic gesture. How about something more daring and meaningful? How about an entire day!?

That's the third or fourth time the 'don't buy gas for a day' gimmick was brought up.  I think you guys need to come with a new arguement...

I'm truly suprised at the incredible amount of cynicysm in this thread!  I thought that pubbers would be supportive of any kind of conservation effort!  I sure was wrong on that one.

I'll be turning off all the lights at my house...and the restaurant where I work too.  We have tealights for all the tables.

...If you guys want to be miserable about it, go right ahead.

If one has time to whine and complain about something then one has the time to do something about it.

There is no use to grumble and complain when it is just as cheap and easy to rejoice.

This is to all the grumpy people out there.

The value of something like this to me is it could show real effects of a mass conscious effort to conserve. Just by people trying to make a difference apart from the necessity of fuel and energy costs.

Even if it turns out to be not very significant the event can only foster more conscious effort in the end . I think anybody can at least have a passing appreciation for that. If those interested see it as a failure in the end then they will know what not to do next time cuz its not like they are just going to stop bringing the subject up.

I'm far from miserable too.
Do you think that not buying gas for a day makes a difference?

If you really want to make a difference, then do something meaningful.
Buy those floresent light bulbs.
Sure they are expensive.
But once I got my whole house filled with them.....
I started seeing a savings of about $20-30 each month.

Set your thermostats to 75 degrees.

Put new seals around your doors.

Car pool.

I could make a LONG list of things that will actually help, rather than fooling myself into believing I've done some good by turning my lights off for an hour.
:whatever:

Oh and btw, I will be turning my lights off at around 10ish and they won't be back on till 5am.

See these are the kind of ideas that the creators of this "Earth Day" are hoping to encourage. If doing something like this can show that we can save millions of dollars (made up statistic, i have no idea if this is amount is possible) simply by conserving energy for one hour, imagine what else we can do if we all put our minds to it?

Even if everyone turning their lights off for one hour isn't going to do anything in the grand scheme things, it certainly isn't going to make things worse, and certainly will encourage some people to start energy conservation. So why the negativity?

I'll turn my lights off, but I think I'll fire up all the TV's in my house, set the thermostat to 50 degrees, keep the microwave on an hour long loop, crank up the oven to it's self clean cycle, turn on all other appliances and just as a kicker I'll turn on the sprinkler system and all the sinks and bathtubs in the house and have a big bonfire in my back yard.

Just to ya know, offset some of the people that actually think turning their lights off for an hour is going to do anything other than increase their smugness and make them feel good about "making a difference".

I think its a good idea to generate awareness and promote better energy saving behaviors. Even if it doesn't make a huge difference, it certainly cant hurt so I'll join the event.

Can I leave the computer on?  I've been downloading this movie for days now I don't wanna stop the torrent!  :P

I think that it is a cute idea and I'll spend my time from 8-9 on a nice walk outside to keep me out of the house and using excess electricity.  Although I admit I will be using the power in my iPod.  Shhh don't tell!!!
