Laminar Flow Hood...the makeing of.

Ok. So I am wanting to make a hood and I have looked into the matter in great detail. I am still a little unsure of what all I am doing. All that math stuff makes my head spin.


I bought a squirrel fan off ebay thinking it would do. Well from my calculations it won't do more than push some air around. Nice fan, just not big enough.

Then I was on a surplus site that has these muffin tin fans. This one was rated for 265cfm or whatever. something close to that. From what I calculated that should be enough power to make a laminar flow hood.

How big of a flow hood could I make out of it. I was also wondering if I can even make one out of a muffin tin fan. I rigged a cord out of a computer power cable and wired it up. The fan is 110-120V 60Hz so I can just plug this one strait into the wall. If blows like a tornado. I figure that I can make it work with some vent pipe and some ingenuity. I also thought about putting in a pretty lighted switch for the power and possibly through a fuse in it. I think I would acheive that with a second smaller compartment within the box or at least on top or someone on the side.

Here is some picks of it. I used this old multimeter to figure out which wire went to which prong of the cable. I think next time I get paid I will make a magnetic stirrer. I have already seen some designs on this site that made me start thinking. I was on another site looking at parts and I was thinking about a design but that is another day.

I will have questions about the heated mixer later. I have a really sweet idea that is a little off from where everyone else is going with it. I was wanting to put a real motor in it instead of a fan (motor). 2 switches and 2 10k pots with slick knobs and the switches would be lighted. Possibly some LEDs...? If you have any ideas for that project shoot me a pm and maybe we can get that worked out.

For an 18x24 hood. You will need a fan that delivers 1,040 CFM at .8" static pressure. At lest thats what i used..

The pictured fan is supposed to be a blower for a flowhood?

That looks a little too underpowered to me.

it is huge. Well it is about an 6 inch fan blade and that things puts off a lot of power. I could take a video. Tomarrow though. I need to sleep. I have work in 6 hours. :wink: 

Thanks for all the input. How much does a motor cost that is 1000cfm. That has to be an assload.
