Can Math Enlighten?
    #8180256 -

This is just speculative bullshit inspired by rice wine, gummy bears, and a documentary I saw on google.

Do you think one can pursue Math to the point where he becomes enlightened by it? Math and Philosophy have always seemed like two sides of the same coin to me.

Watch "A Beautiful Mind", a biographical movie about one of the most brilliant mathematical minds of the 20th century who also had severe mental health issues.

And of course, like I JUST STATED in another thread, before we can rationally discuss how to arrive, we must first validate that such a thing as an enlightened state can and does exist.

Do youtube videos of individuals claiming to be enlightened suffice as enough proof?

I didnt watch the videos...

I think math can help enlighten. I feel more 'enlightened' because I have studied much math.

Think about languages, the languages we speak influence our thoughts and vice versa (sapir-whorf). Our thoughts are expressed in the languages we speak, the more languages we speak the more perspective our thoughts can have (This is why its good to learn foreign language even if your not going to use it).

Math is a language very different from spoken languages. It provides new means of thought and perspective to the people who know it. Thoughts and perspectives completely unknown to those who are ignorant of math. That is why its good to lean math even if your not going to use it.

Not in my worldview.

I always thought math was really beautiful, but it's always frustrated me and got me confused. My dad has always had a knack for math and he used to get so excited when he finished some problem he had been struggling with.

I was born left-handed and I use that as my excuse for being so bad at it. I think lefty's use more of the right side of the brain which is language oriented.

  Is there any evidence of that?  I never believed that shit, always thought it was just a myth.

I have noticed that many of my math/science teachers are left handed (by many I dont mean a majority, just a disproportional amount compared to the general population).  Then I started working as a math tutor and noticed many fellow tutors were left handed.  I get the feeling that math people are more likely to be left handed, however logically I think thats just a feeling and not really the case.

EDIT - maybe its because mathematics uses a right handed coordinate system  .... ehhh nevermind....

I doubt it's possible to "prove" that something entirely intangible exists, especially prior to having an experience of it. It seems the only proof to be had is that of experience itself, and in that case it's only proof to the experiencing individual and those willing to accept thier testimony.

That video in the "stroke of insight" thread was pretty interesting though. A neuroscientist having a stroke and then reporting back that the shutdown of her left hemisphere caused her to experience nirvana is pretty interesting. Of course I'm sure someone could pose an alternative explanation for her experience, considering it verges into metaphysics-- a realm of theory that is largely untestable. I was just really intrigued by her perspective. She's a friggin neuroscientist, after all. This is her realm of expertise.

Find an excuse that isn't based in a debunked myth.

haha well I posted that in hopes of taking some flack, but o well.

I think this is a really good question for this forum. Math, being only a measurement, is completely insubstantial. Its an abstraction of nature, pure relativity.

Thats what it all is, mathamatics, philosophy, spirituality, religion, coming to grips with relativity/uncertainty.

Anyone seen the movie "Pi"?

Like Maximillian Cohen says when being chased by the stock lady : "I'm trying to understand our world. I don't deal with petty materialists like you."

awesome movie by the way.

How is math only measurement? Math has nothing to do with measurement. Measurement is science.

I think I understand what your trying to say, but what other use does math have other than its applications; that is, its reflections of nature?

Sure, 3+2 can be an idea in your head without applying to anything in particular, but the way these numbers add up will always be a reflection of nature. If this wasn't so, 3+2 could equal anything you want.

MATH CAN ENLIGHTEN

2g + 2mg + 500mg = Enlightenment

P.s. I'm left-handed, math is my strong suit.

I think math is the ultimate study of duality and relativity. But thats its limitation, nothing in math can transcend this, as it is always a reflection.

This is huge to consider. I think thats what Max figured out in the end, maybe . Thats what I got out of it at least.

Philosophically, I think math is a lot like language in a way.

I'm just reacquainting myself with mathematics after a 2 year break from high school. My new science major calls for up to calc 2, which I think is going to be pretty tough. So far Im loving it though!

There is a reason they call it enlightenment rather than righteousness

Math would not have been a tool of enlightenment for Plato.

Aristotle, on the other hand, would have something else to say.

Are you an Aristotlian or a Platonian?

I adhere to the school of appleorange thought.

All serious philosophical inquiries are almost always accompanied by the aid of alcoholic beverages such as Sake or Pabst Blue Ribbon. We find that the comprehension of such deep metaphysical concepts comes easier when drunk.
