Well guess what guys, I ended up not being able to take it anymore and got this beauty:

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/6664/img2470ps3.jpg

For only 300€ that can't be beat

As soon as I can rationalize spending 100 more € I'm getting me this:

http://www.thomann.de/nl/harley_benton_ga5.htm

And of course after that real Gibson pups for the new baby. I know an Epiphone is never a Gibson, but just for a bluesy guitar to play for fun I think it'll be a nice addition to my collection

So, anyone can think of a cool name for the new little baby thingy? :drooling:

You can tweak certain aspects of the guitar, this is true. The things you can change very wildly across the board, however. For instance, you can change the neck out on a Strat but you can't on a Les Paul or Paul Reed Smith. There are some major aspects in building that aren't arbitrary to feel or sound. Modding can only go so far. If you mod heavily, you destroy the value of the guitar as well. It's against common logic that it would, but the key point in a guitar's resell value (especially vintage pieces), is how much of it is original.

If you bought your Squier 6 years ago, it's made in either Korea, Indonesia, China, or Mexico. If you check the serial number, the first letter should tell you where. I'm not gonna post the entire system, as it's quite confusing. If you wanna tell me the two letters in the serial number I can get you a country and a year.

American squiers were only made for a couple years in the early 90s with the mexican plant had a fire. Japanese models are highly sought after and were produced in the eighties (called JV Strats). They probably have the highest value of any squier ever made. No offense, but if you told your guitar tech that you bought a Squier new 6 years ago and he asked you if it was made in America, you should probably change techs. Squier and Epiphone are probably the poster boy companies for outsourced guitars due to their relation with Fender and Gibson. The entire point of Squier was to outsource the guitars to sell to an introductory market.

And a few tips for shopping at GC. Try out as many as you can because consistency is something of a mystery at larger stores. Lots of 8 year olds come and jam out to falloutboy all day and quite frankly, some of the guitars are in horrible condition. The QC departments at major manufacturers are usually lacking too, lots of lemons get by (Gibson just went through a pretty bad phase, not as bad as the Norlin era though or fender's CBS era). Sit down and find one with no defects. Make sure the neck is straight, the frets aren't worn, the nut is properly aligned, the neck fits snugly in the pocket, and that there is no physical damage whatsoever (check the back and edges, belt buckles destory these things).

And don't be afraid to negotiate, $599 is probably MAP (minimum advertised price), you should be able to walk out with some free stuff or a discount, especially if there's a minor scratch or two. If the guy hardlines you and won't move on it, just walk out and go to another store or come back later, he's being a prick.

Oo snap, didn't see this page or the guitar.

Congrats on the guitar. I see you've made your decision.

I've only had the chance to try out one GA5 beforem some kid's at school. They're a little finicky, you're gonna have to sit down and fine tune their equalization to get what you want, but it's worth it. It'll probably seem a little muddy out of the box, but 50-100 hours of playtime should break it in nicely especially when oyu have it EQed out. The speaker breaks up a little messy, but that can be easily rectified.

EL84 driven amps are interesting, never owned one. They get more of a brit-rock type sound, definitely more focused on the higher-end frequencies than the 6V6 or 6L6 equipped amps.

Hey, you know those little spring loaded pick holders that have the sticky side?

Well, I had a stroke of genius and stuck one on the back of my headstock, right on top of the s/n and the "crafted in china" stamp.

So, now we know, it's Chinese.

anyway, you know a TON about geetars. I am jealous! although I've played around with the guitar for a few years, I just recently started to get a really huge interest in them. I guess I was tired of only knowing how to read tabs and not understand how it works.

Also, that Epiphone is fecking gorgeous! I'm sure it sounds nice too... but I dunno, I still like the strat. The strat I want is almost on the highest row on the wall of guitars at GC, and doesn't look like many people have handled it, but I'll look for the scratches or other signs of wear.

Also, what is the point of a 5w amp that has one channel, and practically no other features?

wtf is that thing that one guy sitting crossed legged is playing?

Mandolin? it would take me longer to tune that thing than to play a song.

That is the late Brian Jones on the sitar.

if i were in your shoes i'd wait and buy a real gibson. gibsons are fantastic guitars imo. my personal favorite would definitely be the SG. they're terriffic! just make sure that you take it into a guitar fixer once you get it and have him adjust the truss rod, fix the intonation, fix the string action, and look it over before you proceed to rock. for some reason gibsons are usually not set up properly when they come off the assembly line. the guitars themselves are great sounding and play wonderfully, but those minor things i mentioned usually need a bit of tweaking.

if you can't wait, and decide to go with an epiphone, do the same thing. definitely make sure you play a bunch of them before you buy anything because epiphone does make some pretty nice guitars, but they also make some pretty piss poor ones. it just varies from model to model. you can find a nice one if you put the time in trying them out and comparing.

just out of curiosity, how come you are thinking of getting a parker? i know they are good guitars (ugly imo, but very good overall) but why would you go from a les paul/SG to a parker? it seems like a strange jump considering how different they are from each other.

here's what i'm getting when i have the cash. eastwood airline tuxedo. hollow body remake with p-90's. it's pretty fucking rad if you ask me, and pretty to boot.

i can't wait!

Well here she is standing next to my old trusty Strat, Kaina is the new baby's name

I think I got pretty lucky, it plays GREAT (to the point I'm reconsidering how my start plays) and it sounds suprisingly good even with the stock pickups.

I'm so happy, it's inspired me to play all day long, and that's what it's all about! :yesnod:

get a carvin, caparison or failing those an ibanez.

Do you find yourself using that middle pickup much?

Can someone PLEASE explain to me this whole pickup thing?

Like, how do I know which clicky thingy goes to what pickup? and I just discovered those little screw holes above and below them life that side up and down. like what's the best position? Lord, there's just SO MUCH to learn.

I would ask my guitar guy, but I want to utilize all the time I have with him to techniques/playing and not talking.
