And also, while the environment an animal lives in is sort of random due to divergent evolution and the changing of the continents, within one ecosystem it is not random at all.  Just as they evolve to meet their environments, animals will migrate to a more suitible environment if it helps them survive.  When you see animals living in inclimate ecosystems it is because they have evolved in such synergy with the environment that it has become advantageous for them to remain there as apposed to live anywhere else.  Either that or they have no choice, like with polar bears.

Honestly evolution is one of the most fascinating subjects on the planet because it's an absolutely perfect mechanism.  Nothing can beat it.  And yes, that does include humans.

Heheh it seems like it from our perspective, but long-term climate change will eventually destroy every trace of life on this planet. If somehow we survive long enough, the earth will be incinerated by the sun as it swells in its old age. Evolution is fascinating yes, perfect no.

As far as determining which species and individual organism survive and reproduce, evolution is perfect. Yes one day the world will be turned into a smoldering rock by the sun, but as long as this planet has oceans and an atmosphere there will be life. When I say it's perfect I'm referring to the time frame that life is theoretically possible on earth.

As for human interference, humans could scorch the surface of the earth with all the nuclear weaponry we posses and life would still prevail.

i wonder how those last few hundred years of life would be, but you never know, as temperatures increase, animals may increase into heat surviving beings, but most likely, will die, and most likely only prokaryotic organisms will survive. funny, huh? how the beginning life forms will be the ending ones? that's something else.....

we have about 5 billions years before that happens though, right? i mean, the core of the planet hasn't even cooled yet, you'd think the sun has a few more years to tick.

well, i wonder how dying in those last years would work, probably, the crop would all die off, and we'd starve to death.

I'd be surprised as shit if humans are alive at the point when the earth is dying.  If we still exist at that point we'll probably be transcendent trans-humans that have gained the ability to live in the andromeda galaxy or somehting

And then it will be like in Dune!

I heard an idea of moving everyone to lands that aren't farmable when populations to high and use the rest to grow. Or because of some catastrophic event.

Not all genetic changes are random.

Some come from learned skills which are beneficial to the creature's survival and get passed down generation to generation, such as prey drive in predatory creatures.

Yeah but those traits are ingrained genetically as instincts, and their success is what causes them to be passed to successive generations. The original animals who contained the mental capacity to think well enough to hunt prey were the ones who survived to reproduce, and eventually the entire species would be composed of animals with this capacity, integrated in their minds as instinct.

evolution is not pre-destined though

human evolution is undefined which means that it's up to us where humanity is headed, and the possibilities are infinite

Our nature as a species will inevitably define where we go.  Wherever we end up, is where we were always headed.

Of course if you believe that you get into some pretty heavy free will debates, so I'll leave that to another thread

it will take a lot to convince me that there is a concrete "human nature"

but yeah, i definitely don't want to get into this right now :snub:

Evolution IS random. Think about it this way: (this actually happened)

A species of moth in the woods of England lands on white trees, and is colored white. England industrializes and the nasty factory soot stains the trees brown (this is a totally random occurrence). A RANDOM genetic mutation in a tiny amount of the moths makes them the same shade of brown. Other moths are different colors. The different colored moths die off, and this tiny population randomly survives because it's color is camouflage.

Another example: Humans live in the Niger Delta for millenia. They make their homes above the mosquito line in the mountains and live malaria-free. The random introduction of western medicine in society makes the population skyrocket. People must live below the mosquito line or starve. Malaria appears! in viral numbers! Oh no!

But some of the humans have this strange, random genetic mutation that makes some of their red blood cells sickle-shaped. This genetic mutation usually doesn't multiply in a population because two recessive traits from the parents result in sickle-cell anemia and a painful death. But if you only have the mutation on one chromosome, the malaria will not bond to your red blood cells, and you will NEVER catch malaria. Dramatic increase in africans with sickle cell anemia follows.

Evolution is a process in which RANDOM genetic mutations either help, hurt, or do nothing for an animal in an environment effected by totally RANDOM factors, also known as evolutionary stressors. So yes, evolution is random. It just seems specific because the system works very well for life as a whole, even if it seems a bit Malthusian. If it were not for random genetic occurrences, life on this planet COULD NOT EXIST. It is a random but perfect system, sublime beyond all imagination.
