Rubbermaid Roughneck fruiting chamber setup
    #798214 -

Anyone else use Rubbermaid Roughnecks as a fruiting chamber? If so, what is your particular setup whether you are casing or just using cakes. What generates the best yields for you w/ this type of chamber?

My cat uses 73qt Sterilite bins - they?re not quite as sturdy as Rubbermaid, but they do cost significantly less - about $3.50.

Here?s a pic:

A hole was cut into the lid and a piece of plexiglas (about $1.20) was glued over it with some household goop (silicon glue). A 1.5"x1.5X hole was cut into the side about 4" from the bottom and a filter disc (about $.10) was glued over it. Perlite was bought, and a whole bag was used to fill the bottom (about $4.00), with a little added H2O2 (about $.10 worth).

This setup will work as-is, if you don?t mind leaving it out where it can catch some indirect light during the day and you want to find 3x per day. My cat didn?t want to do either of those things, though, so he?s using a gro-light on a timer (about $15 for both items) suspended above the terrarium. For air exchange, he?s using a fish tank air pump (about $10 for a decent one) with the hose ending in a airstone buried in the perlite. The pump is encased in a cheap plastic container with a hole cut out of the lid and another filter disc glued over it (to filter out contams). Inside, the air pump sits on top of a fibrous sponge-like filter, and also has an internal air filter.

That?s how MY cat does it, anyway.

I use the exact same one fanatek. They are pretty cheap and I can fit three 9x13 trays in it at one time.

Mine are just smaller versions of what FanaTEK displayed, but I haven?t used them yet.
I started with two 14 gallon Rubbermaid Roughnecks ($3.79 each from Target). Then I had some 14 x 11 inch acrylic cut down to 14 x 8 ? at Home Depot ($1.85 per) and then cut holes of the exact same size into the lids and hot glued the acrylic to the frame. I will probably do the same as Fana's cat with holes and filters before these see any action, but I haven?t got around to that yet. I don?t have casing containers yet either, but they would each fit two 8 ? x 11 inch casings. BTW, I have no intention of (initially) using perlite. If anyone has any advice?

As a bonus, if you cut the hole 6" up instead of 4", you can use it without any trays or perlite and just fill the bottom with straw spawn. That's a 5" substrate with a 1" casing in a 14x19 tray!

If you dont want perlite and have some extra money to blow, I suggest the vicks coolmist humidifier. I love it. Once you get it setup, you never have to do nothing but just watch your shrooms grow. If you dont want to spend as much money, then some air pumps and a bubbler would probally work too.
