i have bulk questions.

1. ive seen contradictory temps for pastrurization. 150-160, but also 160-170. My friend pasturized his straw at 150 on a cheap candy thermometer, is it possible he went too low?

2. He was afraid to pack it down because he added 20 % compost and didnt want the compost to become too compact. as a result theres lots of air spaces, and its somewhat loose. How much might this slow down colonization?

3. this isn't a question, but the scotts 3 in 1 he used straight out of the bag, (no pasturization or verm. added) appears fully colonized! The reason i say appears, is because the top is colonized...but my friend doesn't have x ray vision, so he doesnt know how well the center colonized. if this experiment works then this scotts shit is the biz!...no prep, and colonizes fast as hell! he'll let everyone know he outcome..

1) You can use compost pasturized at all different temps and lengths of time. The guidelines are just that....guidelines. I don't have a candy thermometer at all...I just throw it in a pot on medium heat for an hour and I have never had problems.

2) I find that little air pockets help for faster colonization....

3) I would say that if the top is colonized it's time to either case or iniate pinning....it should have a goodresistance to contams anyway
