The Mars Volta Live

holy fuck... this band transcends music on so many levels. if you like jamming, intensity, and energy.... let me repeat... energy, you have to check this band out live when they're around.
these guys started at 8:20, and played a straight set through 11:00, with probably 2 songs that actually ended, rather than being jammed into the next song.
cedric's voice reminds me of a young robert plant, improv singing every chance he gets, singing with so much soul you'd think it were his last few moments of life. and when he isn't singing, his dances and body motions perfectly convey the energy and rhythm going on in the background.
omar plays his guitar like nothing i've seen before. he seems to play a perfect duality of rhythm and lead on his guitar, using solos and weird chord phrasing to keep rhythm on a song. and when it's jam time.... man this guy goes into a different world, him and the new drummer (Tom), are perfectly in synch, as the drums guitar, bass, and all the other instruments wail away into the most energetic pieces of music i've ever witnessed.
All in all, fantastic show, colorful friendly crowd, from deadheads, to punks, to just average joes who love the music.
definately encourage you to check these guy

QFT I just got exhausted trying to recognize their "art". Didn't have to see them live.

one of the people i was with had seen them 2 previous times a couple of years back, and she said it's much different with this Bedlam in Goliath tour. back then they'd just go off making noises for 30 minutes, but this was very melodic, just as much energy with a different approach than before.

I was waiting on that. I like Mars Voltas' albums. I really, really do. I've never seen them live before, but I have seen plenty of live footage, and I know people that have seen them, both IRL and online, and pretty much everyone says they're not a live band. I know there's a difference in 'being there' and watching a live DVD, but from what I've seen and heard I think I'd rather listen to one of their albums, sparingly. Most of my beef has to do with Cedric's vocals. If he would stop jumping around so much, he could actually sing the songs without gasping for air in between words. It just ruins it. If you can do both, go for it, but if your 'stage presence' is going to get in the way of your music, it seems like a bit of a gimmick. Just my opinion, which hardly counts anyway.

I wasn't a fan of Amputechture, but I'm still going to pick up the new one I think.

I've seen these guys a total of three times. Once in ventura last year. Again on new years eve and a couple days ago in San Diego.
They are amazing each time and can pump out 3 hour power sets without difficulty. Even got to meet Cedric, Thomas and Ikey after too

you can't expect them to play the albums through as most people expect. it's going to be alot of in the moment playing, so if you're a fan of that, it'll blow your mind.

I don't understand why people expect albums. Other artists/bands don't play albums straight up, so why the fuck would TMV? Unfortunately I find their music flows much better on the albums than live, which is one of my gripes against their live set.

They came here.. The tickets were sold out 2 days after they went on sale.. I Picked some up for 50 bucks a piece.. They canceled the show.
I lost out on 50 bucks all together. They haven't refunded me the $27.00 that the ticket is worth yet. I was looking forward to to seeing them.. I hope they come back.
