Reading and Study
    #7937887 - 01/26/08 10:23 PM (16 years, 6 days ago)

if i plan to start schooling again sometime in the near future, i figure i better start reading and catching up. the last time i was in school was in 2002(high school).

i figure ill have to take some kind of placement test and i want to make sure that im up to par on it.

what kind of things should i be studying?

what would be a good shorter book for me to read? i haven't read a book in forever and i have lots of time on my hands.

is this the right path?

community college for two years would be a great start. it'll prepare you for more focused study in an area of your choice at a reputable university.

Math for sure.

Practice problems are your only hope. Go buy a used Algebra book at a garage sale for $1 and do all the problems.

Twice.

Reading is one of the most important skills to being successful in college.

To get back in the swing of things, I suggest simply reading things you like.  Just spending a few hours here and there reading what interests you will help get your mind into reading mode.  You will have plenty of time to read what doesnt interest you in college.

now wait a min. even my math professor in college told me this: HS and college algebra are much different.

well if i remember correctly,
community college placement exams cover all subjects up to precalculus, which includes trigonometry.

so you should study more than just algebra

and dont fucking forget about geometry

Algebra is algebra... There is easy algebra and there is hard algebra. Each are taught in both HS and college.

My opinion: It might not be too smart to try and place high on the placement exams and then get in a class that is over your head. Do what you can do and get in the class that is most comfortable for you.

The placement test at my community college would go all the way to precal, but the highest class you could test into would be calc. As far as english goes, I tested out of both 101 and 102 because I took them in high school.

You should do well if you were good with english and can at least do some basic trig. If you can do well on some trigonometry, you'll probably test into a precal class or applied calculus class, depending on what you want.

by far the most important thing is getting straight on math. Go to math.com and you can learn pretty much all of the basics and even some of the advanced.

I say this because that placement test means the world. It is the difference between bullshit classes and real classes. I'm paying to REMEMBER things i've already learned due to 4 years absence of math. All this shit in college algebra class that i'm taking, i've already learned and it's just being refreshed. In other words, wasting my time. Luckily, or skillfully, it's the last semester of this.

Develop study habits. I have that bitch of a problem of getting caught up with things, and then taking it easy.

What he said.  If you do math on your own, you're just going to decide to skip school before you ever get there.

Also, you can test out of pretty much any class, they might just not have a premade placement test and you'll have to ask special permission and go through some extra bureaucratic bullshit.

That just means you had easy algebra in HS and hard algebra in college.

High Schools usually offer algebra from the very beginnings to what is known as 'college algebra', and beyond.

Colleges also offer algebra from the very beginnings (high school algebra, or introductory algebra) to, of course, college algebra and beyond.

Its all just algebra though... solving for x and graphing functions mainly. The difficulty just depends on how deep you want/have to get into it.

there are alot of areas of study that require very little mathematical knowledge
college algebra is pretty easy. you just have to memorize a few different formulas.
i would concentrate more on being able to write decent essays. develop your vocabulary.
what do you want to study anyways?

math is the only class in high school that i took an extra year of.  i only made it to geometry but i loved it and found it all very easy.  it's mainly english/grammar that im lagging on.  but im 23 so im rusty when it come to schooling.

well if you go to community college
you should definitely check out its transfer programs

i know over here in CA
the community colleges here have TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) programs
which enables you a guaranteed admission into numerous 4-year colleges including prestigious UC campuses

Don't study for the test..ether you know it, or you don't.

When you go to another school, you may have to take it again.
