Yea that is why I took the pic. I never can catch spiders on their webs especially dead center.

There's no way it's a Golden Orb Weaver. You can tell it's an argiope from the zigzag pattern it forms in its web.
Also the markings are different.
^^^Golden orb, leg markings and abdomen markings are different.

^^^ Argiope, fatter one than the one in your picture but look at the legs.

Man, being bitten by one of those while on a hardcore acid trip - I'd probably play with the spider thinking it was a toy, then find myself vomiting and sweating when I started to come down.
Definitely not my idea of a good trip.

Maybe you call Argiopes Golden Orb Weavers where you are but this is seriously Argiope Aurantia Or a Black-and-Yellow Argiope.
This is a picture of the underside of a Black-and-Yellow Argiope. It has identical markings to those shown in the orginal post.

This is apparently a common spider to North Carolina. Also:
Quote:
In North America, the golden silk orb-weavers are sometimes referred to as writing spiders due to occasional zigzag patterns (stabilimenta) built into their webs, though these occur much more frequently in the webs of Argiope...
It's easy to make the mistake.

What's that pinkish looking spot, kind of like a vagina, near the top part of the picture?

Those are the spider's spinnerets. They are odd looking in the argiope.
That spider in the initial photo is a male, as the females are fatties.
