Spider identification needed
    #4365442 - 07/03/05 04:50 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

i have here a very LARGE spider that i found in my closet crawling around thinking he was all stealthy. little did he know that i had catlike reflexives and i caught his ass with a babyfood jar that i had chilling in my room (its my new LC jar). anyway he has 2 secession's to him if that make and sense and he has black and yellow stripes running down his back from head to "ass". and he pretty much takes up the whole bottom of the jar for size reference. he has these 2 little arms right by his mouth then i can see what look to be like fangs. i hate spiders and if i didn't haves a few shots in me i prob would have just smashed the fucker but i would like to know what kind of spider he is. I am in IL by the way. (near Chicago)

That is a nasty looking spider, and the one this guy caught sounds pretty bad too. I don't like spiders.

Put it in your mouth, and mash it up really good with your tongue. Report back with how it tasted, and I should be able to provide you with the list of possible spiders it may have been.

Bon appetit!

Jewel Spider - Gasteracantha Minax.

A spider that I find truly disturbing, is one that has freaking PINCHERS.

'nother picture:

That's just not right.

If it had a pair of wings, then Hell has taken over and I'd never step foot outside.

Those aren't even spiders, just some type of arachnid. They kind of resemble wind scorpions (I am no expert).

Oh, hey...and you do not just see a brown recluse hanging around your house. They aren't called "recluse" for nothing. I live in a state in which 75% of homes have brown recluses living in them, and I have never seen one. I have a liking for spiders, which also means I have an eye for them. If they're there, I usually see them. Still, in 26 years, I have never seen a non-captive brown recluse.

Those were great (nasty) pictures in the "Arachnophobia" thread, but that is an uncommon reaction to a brown recluse bite. Only about 1 in 10 people will experience nectrotizing of the bite area to such an extent. Generally, a brown recluse bite causes burning of the bite area, severity dependent on reaction, and a small open wound which takes a few weeks to heal. Many people who are bitten will never seek medical attention, and are in no danger.

You are several times more likely to be injured under the influence of psychedelic drugs than to ever be bitten by a dangerously toxic spider. Especially in the states which many of you live. So what is it like to have an unrealistic fear of an animal you could easily squash? You want something to be scared of? Be scared of yourself. You are probably the number one threat to your health and personal safety.
