Male or Female?

I have a friend who is growing for the first time. There are 5 plants. 4 of them are starting to show little signs of budding, one of them has tiny little appendages that resemble seeds. This plant is about the same height at the other ones, but the leaves are a lot less impressive and the stalk is considerably skinnier. I think it might be male...but I'm not sure.
What are the physical differences between a male and female plant? Do male plants bud?
Do both male and female plants seed? What are male plants good for? Are they worth keeping even? Help!

both male and female plants flower, the "seed-like" things you describe sound like male flowers. female plants will grow a little calyx with a pistil comming out, it will look like a little white hair comming out where the leaves come off the stem. only female plants will grow seeds, and only if they are pollinated by a male. you could use the leaves from the male to cook with or to make hash of some sort, but as far as smoking goes, the males are pretty damn worthless.

if your male plants are near the females and their "nut-sacks" open up then you will have some seedy buds... from my own experiences the males will grow taller than the females and the will also show sex before the females do...like AJ said, the females will have a hair like pistil form at their nodes... i would recommend that you get rid of the males asap so that they dont pollinate your ladies and make your buds seeded... if you are familiar with what strains the seeds are and you dont wanna clone it but you do want to get some seeds off them for future grows, i have had success with cross-pollination with a cue-tip...be very careful though...remove the males into another place and carefully open up their "nut-sacks" and dab a que-tip into the pollen...then proceed to swab a pistil with the pollen on a lower flowering site preferably at the bottom where the buds will be the smallest... be sure that your fans are off if your growing indoors... i pollinated two sites on one of my plants and recieved quite a few seeds and i didnt effect the rest of my fruiting sites..i ended up with enough seeds for later use which i have been passing out to people that i have become friends with here on the boards since i can no longer grow...hope all is going well for you lucky guys...i always make honey oil with my males and it is excellent stuff from the good for nothing males....hope i shed a little light on this subject....good luck and i hope that you have more females than you do males...

I have heard that males have less THC in them and therefore less useful for smoke. However they can still be used with with a little effort to blow you mind.
If you can keep them separate or you need a seed crop then keep your males. Harvest and dry. Reduce everything (leaves, stems, flowers, etc.) to a course green flour. It doesn't need to be a fine powder, it just needs to be manageable. Next, add the green flour to a large class jar with a lid. Then, add Everclear (90% grain alcohol). This must be drinkable alcohol (i.e. ethanol not isopropanol).
Leave the jar for at least a week per plant used. Shake daily. The THC will slowly extract into the alcohol. The longer it sits, the better.
Next, pour off the Everclear and save. If you feel there may be some goodies in the green flour throw it back in the jar with more alcohol to sit. Strain the flour in a cheese cloth or use a wine press, but get as much liquid out as possible.
Once the ethanol is separate from the herb, reduce it by evaporation. This is where dosage gets tricky. Why? The more you reduce the alcohol, the more concentrated the THC and other cannabinoids are within the Everclear. This should make about 4oz of cannabis tincture per plant.
Store your cannabis tincture in a brown glass bottle with a dropper. One drop under the tongue will do. Not only that but it leaves no resin in the lungs, no smoke smell on the shirt, no stinky fingers, no more anxiety when the pipe brakes and there are no papers to be found.
Tip: if the alcohol burns the sub-lingual tissue, put a few drops in very hot tea. When it is cool enough to drink, the alcohol will have evaporated leaving the green goodies in you tea.

haha - yes, girlies rule!!!
After reading DrJ 'weed file' (yes, he makes me study - oooh the slave driver that he is ) I can say that even I have learnt to tell the difference; generally speaking; boy plants have little balls, gily plants have hairs... (and if you catch them listening to Cher, you just have to worry!)
Good page here on sexing plants - http://www.sensiseeds.com/ml/shop.asp?MainLev=9&nfoID=14 but here's the diagram used...
Hope this helps!

Heehee, isn't that the same as (when coming home smelling of smoke) you say to your Mum, "My friends were smoking... that's why my clothes smell of cigarettes!"
LOL

This thread is really old.
In case anyone was wondering, it really was a friend. REALLY. The harvest was not too bad for a first time grower. Good times.
