Cherokees brake down a lot. You'll need to budget some cash for emergency maintenance.

I do a lot of off roading, and these jeeps in particular I have found to be awesome for just that.
Some things to look out for is rust on the floor boards. See if you can lift up some of the carpet where you put your feet and see if you can find any.
1995 was the best year for jeep grand cherokee's in my opinion too. They don't have all the extra electronics to fail on you ( I think the next year introduced fiber optic control moduals for door locks/windows/ etc )
And they are built like Lego! easy to work on and you can mod these as much as you want, and they are cheap to repair and replace parts too.
The v8 is a hog on gas though,
I hope that helps

i've had a Cherokee for the last 4 years or so and it's been great. i bought it around 130,000 miles or so and it's now at 180,000. all i've had to replace is the starter, battery, water pump, and tires.
are you talking about the Laredo?

I'd look for a nice 2-door Jeep Cherokee before I would buy that thing. But im not saying it wouldn’t be nice...
What are you plans for the vehicle?

My dad left town when I was 16 (02'?) and I took it and drove it 60mph over a cattleguard, blew the tire and rolled it :p

Yea, they are a bit top heavy...
I have never deal't with the v6, but the strait 6 is better than the v8 as far as gas to power ratio goes.

I myself would take the strait 6 over the V8 if I was going to use a vehicle like this for a daily driver/fun kinda car.
But I would take the V8 if I was going to put some nice 19" rims on, lower the ride by about an inch, not for off road driving. You will get WAY better responce from a bigger engine. but the 6 is better for torque and gas milage.
I don't know if you have checked already, but some questions I would ask the dealership would be:
Is there a history on the car available? Has it ever been in an accident?
If you look closely along the rubber trim of the windows, can you see some "over-spray" from the vehicle being re-painted because of a colision?
Check the underside of the car as well, is there alot of rust?
If you look at the car from either the front or back, does it look twisted?
And finaly, ask the dealership if you can talk to the previous owner, and ask him what kind of troubles the car has.
The dealership may say because of the privacy of information act ( or whatever it is called in America ) that information is not available, but tell them you are an "old fasioned" when it comes to cars, and that you are only interested if you can talk to who owned it last. Stick to your gun's on this one. In every situation I have asked this, they have found way's to make this work. Usually they ask the previous owner if he minds calling me ( the buyer ) and there is usually no problem. This tells the dealership you are serious too. Remember, you are the one with the money. If they refuse to work with you, then something is wrong with the car.
Wow, that was a mouthfull. and I missed 4:20... Damn

Yeah, I should've clarified, it was tha Laredo, It cost $3000 usd in maintainence over 3 years, but that includes the time I high centered it on a neighbor's landscaping rock 3 blocks away from my house. I fell asleep while driving. My friend had problems with his Grand Cherokee though too.
