magnetic stirrer

What i was wondering is when you place a piece of metal in the jar can that piece of metal be a magnet as well. I know this question might seem like it dosnt make sense to sum but if you know what im talking about you would probably be able to answer.

if you are asking whether or not the stir-bar that you put in your jar needs to be magnetic or not... then yes, it does. otherwise the magnetic stir plate wouldn't attract and spin the stirbar.

Actually it does not need to be magnetic. It just has to be attracted by the magnetic field in your stir plate. There are many options of metal, non magnetic stir substitutes.

With that said, after using a stir bar that has a magnet in it. I will never go back because it works much better. But it is not necessary.

I believe some stirrers don't have magnets built in and rely on the stir bar itself being magnetized. If that's the case, then obviously it won't work. Even if the stirrer is magnetized, it may still not have a strong enough magnet to attract the metal, which I found out when I tried to make my own stir bars with nails. The nails would spin a little when the stirrer was set at a slower speed, but lost the attraction with the stirrer magnet at higher speeds. I finally ended up ordering some cheap stir bars from Cynmar.

yup, exactly. when i tried to use a nonmagnetic stir bar it just did a half-assed job and made me wish i had used a magnetic one.

so you guys were close to answering my question i didnt state it right so its understood. Can the stir-bar that you put in your jar be a magnet aswell not just a piece of metal that reacts to a magnet. I have a round magnet the size of the ball in a mouse. im wondering if this would work.

You could probably use that round magnet although it probably wouldn't do much in terms of agitating/breaking up the cloudy myc. What you could try is maybe attaching a piece of metal (broken nail or similar) that would be attracted to the magnet to give your stirrer some sharper edges to cut the myc up as it spun. Do a test run using plain water and see if that will give you the needed agitation to break up the myc.

Grod, Go to your local Hobby store and by a cheap magnet. Cut it in half. This is the one I use.

i wish i went to my local hardware store, home depo, ace hardware, true value, c.v.s and wall greens. non of them had a magnet... i dont know ware to go i guess ill have to order it.

Hobby Lobby, or Micheals! You have to look at HOBBY STORES! Go to Toys R' Us and look in the Science toys. The Smithonian type childrens toys have a "Fun with Magnets" or something like that. They're out there, I promise! Hobby stores! Hobby stores!
