How can I build some credit?

i've decided that im going to buy a newer used car and just make payments. but im going to pay a huge down payment so that i can pay it off faster. the only problem is that i have no credit.
what's it like signing up for a credit card? is that the best way to build up credit? how long do you all think it would take for me to get the bank to lend me $10,000?

after you make a few payments theyll raise your maximum if you want. I just have a 500 max. dont get any card with an apr over 8% to thats just like rape. Never miss a payment or go over cause then its actually rape.

getting a credit card is the best way to get into debt.

get a title loan.

Only if you're retarded with money. Pay off your full bill each month and not just the monthly minimum and you'll be fine.

My credit history began with a car. I'd never had a credit card or any other line of credit and I only had a checking account for a while which was used to write rent checks only. But a car dealer still gave me a loan for a car.
Now my credit score is in the 800 range. I can get pretty much anything I want.

Dude you go in there with cash, you'll get whatever you want regardless of credit. They advertise at most used car places about their "no credit is ok" bs, hold them to it. Defiantly do your research about the vehicles your going out to buy, never buy from the first dealer, and compare everythingfor the dealer to get a lower price.
But honestly if you take a few grand in cash into one of those places, they'll defiantly work with you.
To build credit, heres a general rule you should always go buy. As backwards as it might sound its the truth. This is how I started to build credit, My score is in the low 700's.
When starting with a credit card you never want to pay your total balance in one payment! Always keep a running balance!
They don't want you to pay off your bill in 1 check, early. They make no money. They want you to pay your bill, plus their interest, early. They make money for doing absolutely nothing. This is ideal for them, which is why this is the best way to build credit.

It was just under 10K I think. But this was nearly 2 decades ago. And no, I had no credit before that.
edit- To be fair, I had to go to several dealers before I found one that would lend me money without a co-signer. But I got it done.

If you pay cash, I'd say you should at least be able to pull off $8,000. If they go higher than 8,500 walk out the door, and I'd bet 100 bucks they stop you before you get out the door.

dude, no.
getting a small loan ($1000) and paying it off in one month will do nothing to improve your credit score. your credit score will improve by getting a loan and paying it off over the course of however long the loan is structured. $1000 loan paid of in 12 months, or whatever. you can pay it off a little early if your state doesnt allow lending institutions to charge you some sort of penalty for paying off the loan early. (my state doesnt) but, really the bank isnt making a lot off of you with $1000 loan anyways, and proving that you can pay off the debt on time will boost your score.
go to a car dealership with inhouse financing, they will bend over backwards to make sure you can buy a car from them.
for the record, i only have one credit card and i rarely need to use it. but, in general, many people cant handle having a credit card.
