please help identifying these shrooms
    #774906 - 07/25/02 03:29 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

I just picked these in my backyard. They were growing on some grass underneath a tree. The caps are an orangish-red color. They range in size from 1/2" - 2" wide. Underneath, where the gills are, it is almost like a sponge. ?? Anyway, I was just interested in what these might be, I have seen many of them over the last few days. It?s been very wet and humid lately, lots of rain at night. THANKS!!

Thanks for the info. I live in West Tennessee. I didn't think they were active, just wondering what they were. I've seen close to a hundred of these in the last week.

Definitely a type of bloetus, not active. Some are edible, some are mildly poisonous, none are deadly.

Based on your description and what I can see in the photo, Boletus campestris looks like a good match. There are a number of closely related species which are very similar in appearance, so it could be one of them, also. Boletus campestris is noteworthy in the group for its habit of growing in shaded grassy areas. One of the closely related species which deserves mention is Boletus rubellus, mostly because it's relatively common. Some of these species are edible and some cause gastrointestinal irritation and not all have been tested, so you probably shouldn't eat them.

Happy mushrooming!

LK is right some are poisonous none are deadly"", some are prized in Europe as edibles...don't eat them raw...if you eat them.

Cheers

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

Xerocomus rubellus, edible but not very tasty.
Boletes are very highly prized in Europe, especially Boletus edulis. Mainly because they are very safe to ID. People just eat everything with non-red pores.
