Re: How do you force a 17 yr old to finish high school? [Re: Newbie]

Sometimes people just need to learn the hard way. Maybe somewhere down the road he'll realize what a mess his life has become and figure out that he needs to get his ass in gear. It'll be tough to watch him go through it, but I've known several people who went through a dark time in their life and came out of it a better person.

I hated high school. Just hated it. I liked seeing all my friends each day, and going to high schooler partys, but sitting in a classroom drove me nuts. Being a complete stoner didnt help the situation any, I just wanted to go home and smoke my bong.. and play music with my band.

I started missing a lot of school days because I would go travel a bit and take short tours, only to come back to high school thinking what a bore it was. Id sit in class knowing "damn, the grateful dead are playing in philly tonight and Im sitting here wasting my time missing it". A lot of my friends dropped out to do it, and I wanted to also. About a month before graduation I sat down with my parents and told them I was going to drop out and go on tour instead. They talked me out of it, thankfully, and I managed to graduated some-how, and then toured the world searching for the sound.. which was always fun.

When I went to college I actually enjoyed it, I got to pick my own classes and liked not having so many strict rules like high school had. I had straight A's in college as opposed to C's in highschool. Alot of times in highschool, when taking tests were you have to mark A, B, C, D, or E, Id just go through it and mark it all down without even reading any of the questions. I did that with SAT's and other exams like that too, I just didnt give a fuck.

Anyways, I wouldn't give that brother of yours anymoney. He will just spend it on herb and make him lazier... I'm surprised the school hasnt called your father about this. I knew a mom who didnt care at the time if her kids went to school and let them stay home instead, they were younger like in middle-school, but i think she actually got arrested for it. Things are probably different in highschool tho..

I dunno man, sounds like he is just lazy from smoking too much dope, with a typical 17 year olds attitude about school. I would spend a lot of time with him talking to him about the importance of education and hard work. Maybe drag him in to see a guidence counsler to set him straight. Too bad your moms not around, sounds like she would have a better handle on the situation than the two of you do.

Good luck

I talked to him before, pleaded with him to do AT LEAST high school. My round of friends were over one time and they sat him down and tried their hand at it, to no avail. All he has to do is show up! I mean in my Senior Year I had maybe 2 really hard classes but the rest of the teachers know we all had senioritis and didn't make the load too heavy.

Well I threatened to call social services on him after calmly asking him to please cooperate with my dad and to stop doing this to him, his response was, "See what happens. I've never fought you before but I won't hesitate."

I told him, "I'm not trying to be an asshole man, I just want to see you finish high school."

He's a lost cause. He obviously is headed for trouble, don't get caught up in it with him.

Move on... you tried.

If you still want to help, take him around the town and talk to the homeless bums... Eventually, that's where he will be. Maybe something will click.

With any luck, he might get his GED in prison.

NewbieShroom Im in the exact same boat as you. The only difference is my faggot ass 17 year old brother shoves and punches my 60 year old dad when he doesnt get his way. Actualy this went down just last night because that little fuck didn't get his own way. Like you were saying I guarantee I will not talk to him again when I move out of here, I just fucking hate his guts. My parents give him everything and he throws it back in their face. Its sad to say but If he died today I wouldn't even flinch I hate him so much. Don't let it get to you like I did because you'll end up doing something you regret.

Yeah for real man... If he doesn't finish high school he'll never amount to anything.

Here's a plus... If he's the loser, then you'll always look better by comparison.  Your dad should tell him, "Why aren't you more like your brother?"

Well its safe to say that people who don't graduate from high school are generally less likely to be successful in any sense. I think he just needs a good beating and you're the one who is going to administer it, NewbieShroomie. Its for his own good. That or just kick him out on the street, he will come crawling back to high school.

I dropped out of high school when I was 17.

I know go to college, drive a bmw, and have a full time job.

I don't think everyone is as good at life as I am though.

thats part of them problem there, you can't let him think he's bigger and tougher then you guys, if my little brother ever said that to me (especially when i was trying to help him) i would whoop his ass. You have to put him in his place, let him know that he has to listen to his older brother and father. Dont kill the kid, just teach him a lesson, sometimes that's the only thing that will work, especially if they think there tough, you have to show him who's in control

I'm not looking for him to have a reason to call the police on me, because after I threatened him today with school he most likely would. I really don't know what he's capable of, and personally I don't trust him. I don't think he's mentally stable, I mean he's not insane or anything but his thought process doesn't seem healthy at all.

Your best bet is to come off as a big brother rather than his parent. Let him screw up, you've said what you need to. He'll come around alot quicker if you don't force feed him.

This is a sticky situation.  Loser kid, permissive parents, etc..

I notice that loser kids with tough parents eventually get their acts together because they have to.  Loser kids with permissive parents STAY losers though because they get to live at home for free, mooch, and be a parasite with no consequences.

Your dad needs to get tough.  Kick his ass out the second he turns 18.

17 is too late, imo. you cant change a 17 year old, you just have to let them fuckup and fix themselves. i wouldnt give him one penny ever again, though. here is what he is going to do. he is going to loaf, hang out with friends, maybe get a part time job at a garden center or something similar. over the course of the next few years, he is going to pawn everything he has of value, then he will start hitting up you and the old man again. that is the time to be strong... after he has nothing and is begging for money. then you can help him with basic things like shelter and food (never any cash) as long as he maintains a job and is on course to get his GED and own place to live.

or none of that shit will happen and i am a bit too intoxicated. :smirk:

  No that's solid advice, I'm just trying to be a brother and steer him in the right direction.  I don't even like the kid, not at all, but I still would like to see him graduate high school.  It's just the right thing to do.

give him lots of acid and strap him down and make him watch dirty jobs WITH Mike Rowe. Then he will pretty much have to go to high school
