Anybody able to identify these guys?

hm, they do resemble the san pedro cacti that I have in my windowsill alot. Especially the shape of the shorter cactus, however my san pedro cacti don't have needles on top that start with a green color. Too bad I don't have pics to compare and I'm not a cactus expert either. Perhaps you should pm meneercactus if he doesn't show up in this thread already, I bet he could tell you more

as far as dosage I'd take them both, they're not that big and together I guess it would be at least a medium dose. If they're really san pedro that is

If these are worth using, your saying that both would be neccesary?! Hell. Thats a lot of material! The tall is 20inches x 3+inches thick, and the small is 14inches x 3.5+inches thick. Thats almost 3 feet worth of cactus!

Also, note the little V marks above the needles on both cacti. Swim thought it was a particular feature in one genus. Swim appreciates the help PsyFlux! On a side note, where are all the cactiphiles? Anybody know of a cacti specific forum for ID's and such? Is there enough interest for one at the shroomery? I know it would benefit me, as I find these damned cacti's popping up everywhere around town, on dung, and all over the back yard... especially after it rains...maybe not.

heh, that would be a lot of material indeed, they didn't look that huge to me on the pic
guess one would be just right actually... most online resources I've found recommend about a foot long and a few inches thick for a medium dose. If only my cacti grew a bit faster....

Mine don't have those V-marks at all by the way

they are definately not Tricocherous pachanoi (sp) a.k.a. san pedro.

however they do look sort of like the Tricocherous Peruvianus (sp) a.k.a peruvian torch. i'm no expert tho so i'm not sure enough that you should go eating them.

i'm damn sure they aren't san pedro's tho, they should look like this:

Does anyone know how I can get an exact (or close) ID on cactus? It seems that cacti experts are hard to come by on this board and everywhere else for that matter. I've looked through ID books, and they tend to make things even more confusing. How does a virgin cactiphile get his/her cacti properly ID'd, especially with the increasing interest in these vegetables these days? Anyone know a good book or source for cacti ID's? I haven't heard near as many horror stories of cacti poisonings as I have shroom poisoning, but I have heard of a few. It's enough to scare me out of experimenting. I love these things as house plants, but, if they could suit another purpose......

I'm just lost. Any overlords of the shroomery thought of making a new forum for cacti ID's? Isn't there enough interest? And, just how safe is eating a cactus that looks similar, doesn't burn the hell out of your mouth, but only without an ID? Should I be this paranoid? And what are those black helicopters and white vans doing following me wherever I go...

Next time try posting your plant questions in the Ethnobotanical Garden thread.

I'm no expert but you have two T. Peruvianus. The green on the needles is a good thing. Shows new growth is on the way. By your photos I would have guessed them to be shorter than you stated too. You telling us that you have these sprouting up in cow paddies all over where you live? WTF? I gotta admit, that sounds like bullshit to me. Show us some pictures. Put em in the Ethnobotanical Garden thread please.

Bluemoon,
One way to helpfuly id a cacti is to wait till it flowers.
Flowers are usually more complex than the plants they stem from and many times have more potential id elements (consider orchids as an example)
The flower considered with the plant as a whole can narrow down the id a lot.

Other elements to look for:
Number of ribs
number of spines
shape of the spines themself as well as angle coming off the stem
length of spines
color of spines
indentation of the ribs
skin color (the changing skin color in different light can also help specify)
growing characteristics (ie, height, width, branching, pupping, root formation)
Visual analysis of the seeds
Microscopy (even electron microscopy-if you have one handy) of the pollen
Location where plant was found growing natively
How the plant responds to watering regimen.
etc.

They are not illegal to grow and own unless there is evidence that you are going to use them for ingestion (such as having a large baggie of dried flesh or a bottle of extract).

Actually his position is that because they contain mescaline, they are an illegal plant but that the DEA has not deemed it important enough for enforcement. Considering more recent interpretations of the laws by various courts, he might not be so far off base.

Not san pedro or peruvian torch for sure. Most likely Stetsonia Coryne, an inactive.
