Humidity Too High? *pic now* * 1
    #766445 - 07/22/02 05:30 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Hi All,

I am a first time cultivator and wanted to experiment with using pickle jars as one-cake terrariums. However, the cake has been pinning like crazy, but the pins just turn into more fluffy mycelium. It has been one week today, and there is still no mushrooms. I read on this site that if it keeps growing the fluffy mycelium, then the humidity is too high... is this true? Do I need to post pics? I am using BRF cakes with peurto rican spores. I am using perlite as a the hu;midity source, maybe there is too much? or too much water? Is there a specific way i can get the pins to turn into mushrooms? Any help would be appreciated.

Gar

ok, maybe they haven't, maybe I should post some pics later today.... They are growing pin-like structures, but they are not turning into mushrooms, or aborts, or anything, they just get fluffy all over and turn into fluffy button-like structures. It has been 7 days, when do you think I should start worrying? The temp is at a constant 75-80 degree range (mostly about 76) and I don't know what the humidity is because of they are gallon pickle jars and I can't put a humidity guage in each one.

The buttons are good, those are the knots. The pins you are referring to are strands of mycelium that venture out looking for more food, that does not mean your cake is out of nutirents its just its last effort before it fruits.

I agree. Waiting is the hardest part. Sounds like they're getting ready to pin, just be patient. Repost in a couple days with a report. Pics are helpful too.
