5-HTP
    #7656749 - 11/19/07 08:48 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

i went out and i bought some 5-HTP today. if you're unfamiliar, 5-HTP is a naturally-occurring amino acid that becomes converted into serotonin in the brain.

from what i hear, taking 5-HTP can, in the long run, make you feel a lot happier, make your moods generally much more pleasant, and improve your sleep and appetite as well. i feel that all our decisions, thoughts, impulses are all influenced by our emotions, and often i am very cranky, anxious or sad when i know i should be very happy about my life. i'm hoping more serotonin in my brain can help me organize my thoughts and my emotions and help me realize some good things about myself.

anyway, do any of you people here have any experience with using 5-HTP?

and, what do you think about this?

anything i should know?

i'm anxious to look forward to tomorrow, a bright and brand new day.

i got it at the pharmacy down the street. you can buy 5-HTP mostly anywhere i think? CVS, walgreens.. any pharmacy will most likely have it. it is over the counter, and i heard it is a good alternative to try to combat depression or anxiety.

Definitely could tell a huge difference with 5-htp.
It's good.

100mg a day is perfect for me, I don't feel any need to go any higher. This is something that would prolly be smart to stick to the recommended dosage, which is 100mg.

i've actually read recommended dosages that range from 150mg-300mg, but i think the higher dosages make you nauseas.

ive always seen this stuff around, but always wondered how much of it actually turned into seretonin, and how much of that seretonin is than utilized, i could also see seretonin poisoning happening from takin this if your not careful (assuming its efficient)

i've used it on and off for years. it is extremely helpful post mdma use for depression issues, especially the day after.

i've found it also helps me sleep through the night much easier - i used to wake up at least once during most nights and that doesn't happen when i take 5-htp.

on the flipside, i sometimes have very strange dreams... i wouldn't call them nightmares but they can seem very serious or full of anxious situations where i'm trapped or running away or dealing with an enemy, etc. this could be a personal thing i'm not sure... but i highly doubt it's the 5-htp directly and attribute it more to an elevated level of serotonin as a result of the 5-htp. if that's true, then i'd say it's pretty efficiently metabolized.

5-htp can't really hurt as long as your brain is "normal" - i.e. you don't have serious pre-existing serotonergic complications going on. there are a lot of doctors nowadays who will suggest patients start with this for depression as well as things like headaches. there are a few books on 5-htp and how it's a wonderful remedy for lots of things.

No, actually the pills are really small if you get ones with just 5-htp in them. I've also had ones that had 5-htp and valerian root, and there's were a lot bigger. But valerian root has an inverse effect on me (makes me all wired) so i don't get those anymore

how long until i notice the results?

i want to say that it has helped, and the past few days have been very happy, but that can be attributed to a number of things. also, i'm depressed as hell right now.

i'm just curious if these results should be immediate, or if it takes a few weeks for serotonin to slowly accumulate...

it depends. there are some immediate results for me but to get back to feeling good and full and healthy takes a few weeks for me.
