Well, I'm just gonna tell you everyone that I listen to.

McCoy Tyner (definitely my favorite piano player)
Roy Hargrove (and his RH Factor shit is tight as hell)
Joshue Redman (his elastic band stuff is tight as hell also)
Art Blakey
Cedar Walton (another piano player)
Chris Potter
Dave Holland
Eric Alexander
Herbie Hancock
Jaco
Jeff Tain Watts
Kenny Garrett
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra
GRP All-Stars
Dizzy Gillespie
Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Band
Medeski, Martin, Wood
Ornette Coleman
Coleman Hawkins
Cannonball Adderly
Pat Metheny Group
Sun Ra
Monk
Wynton Marsalis
Branford Marsalis
Lee Morgan
Miles Davis and Coltrane obviously
Clifford Brown
Freddie Hubbard
Nicholas Peyton
Clark Terry
Kenny Dorham
Terrence Blanchard
James Carter

There's a good little list for you to go with. You could branch out from there depending on what (if anything) you like.

^^^ pretty much what he said.

for piano stuff, he mentioned mccoy tyner. obviously, great first choice. herbie hancock was also mention, but you must be reminded to check out his early works such as "dimensions" and "my point of view" for piano works.

however, with such an extensive list, i couldn't believe you forget:

the great Ahmad Jamal (miles davis WORSHIPPED this guy - check out his album "awakenings". proballly EXACTLY what you're looking for)

thelonius monk
horace silver
bill evans
red garland

he was asking for piano specifics. i know you were namin off just what you listened to, but im suprised you didn't list these cats.

I can't believe nobody said Weather Report; they're a fusion jazz band that had some really great musicians including Jaco Pastorius on Bass, Joe Zawinul (Synth/Keys), and Wayne Shorter (Sax). I highly recommend checking out the album Black Market; Gibraltar and River People are my favorite tracks.

I said Jaco, I figured that would just include any of Jaco's works.

I'd also like to add Bela Fleck and the Flecktones to the list along with Michael Brecker ()

Why does everyone always forget about TETE MONTOLIU. He's up there with Bill Evans and Thelonius but so so ignored. Best blind pianist there ever was

I just picked up a Jason Marsalis CD last night, it's interesting. I'm only on the third track, but I'd say it's worth checking out.
