Bamboo
    #7581236 -

I know it is not an ethno, but will a cutting root on its own?

I went to my moms house the other day and my sis had comepltely denied the fact that she had bamboo growing.

80% of it was dead but there was a offshoot at the top that was mostly green, so I snapped it off and took it home.

Left it in water for about a week with no rootage. So now I stuck it in some dirt. Think I have any chance?

You need to take more than a cutting off of the plant, new shoots on a bamboo survive off of the nutrients provided by the mother section of the clump. The more older growth you grab, the more chance the section you have will survive. If it's just new growth it will die.

You need a rhizome or a "runner" for propagation.....

Bamboo is VERY invasive, it will take over your whole garden soon. You better think twice about it, it´s really hard to erradicate because every bit of rhizome will regrow...

some bamboo grows better in dirt than water, but the one you have is basically breed to grow in water and rocks. It can take a while for it to grow roots, It will be really slow growing bamboo even though normal bamboo in its natural habitat can grow 3 to 4 feet in height in one day in peak growing season. Ive had bamboo grow in my aquarium completely submerged under water. It eventually rotted though. If the cutting you have has leaves on it it will root much faster. Basically you have a slim chance of it surviving. Just let it do its thing, you will know eventually what it decides to do.

There are some "clumping" varieties that don't have those characteristics and are preferred for cultivation.

"lucky bamboo" is not real bamboo BTW. actually there are a few bamboo lookalikes that people keep calling bamboo, but are not.

nto all bamboo are that invasive either...but i agree many are. teh mountains here are over run with the shit and it makes hiking literally almost impossible! i hate it, but its so damn useful i tell myself not to.

bamboo shoots are great in soup!

haha thanks, i knew there was a difference between the bamboo grown in water and rocks that is sold all over the united states and the stuff that grows in soil. Lowes actually was selling some of the soil based bamboo a few months back, it was skinnier and a lot taller and there were a lot more of them.
