XBOX 360 require an HDTV ?

Or is there a cable or a setting or something that will allow it to run on my piece of crap TV ?

Yes, the cable will have standard video connections and HDTV connections. You can use either or. They would lose a ton of business it that were the case. I'm assuming you have the standard yellow(video), white, and red(sound) input on your tv and if so you will be fine. You can use a adaptor to hook it up through the cable input also.

A buddy of mine got a 360 Elite and it came with a HDMI cable or rather that package does. He should just have to get a new cable right?

he can get the cable from the premium xbox360 with the component adapter

There is a "switch" on the part of the standard connector that goes into the back of the XBOX. Make sure it's set to standard def.

I doubt this applies to the new HDMI cable, which is only for HDTV. But the normal cable has the switch. You also have to set it up in the settings part of the XBOX dashboard. The blade all the way to the right has video options.
