Poking holes during incubation with micropore
    #7554944 - 10/24/07 01:12 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Is it neccessary to poke holes on top of covered aluminum covered trays like this with micropore?

yes it is. your colonizing sub needs gas exchange. you only need a few holes. i only do about 6 fork holes.

I poke a few slits with a knife(four or five), but never cover them with tape. In addition, it's really not necessary anyway, since the foil doesn't make an air-tight seal around the edges, so you get your gas exchange that way.

I second what RR said...at least when spawning to coir with a vigorous specimen, you don't have to worry too much about contams imho. I have, for example, remixed trays that are only colonizing in on one side because the spawn was unevenly distributed, heat source was close to one side, etc...WITH MY BARE (washed and sanitized) HANDS. No contams yet.

If you give it the right environment, spawn ratio, etc. the mycelium will outgrow everything else.

YMMV, of course.

i prefer cling-film with several micro-taped holes.
then cover with newspaper or foil if you wish to keep out light.
you can then take a quick peek to see how far the substrate has colonized without exposing it to fresh air.
maybe a little anal.just a preference.
