I dig Less than jake. I don';t know much about modern Ska other than the Slackers. I LOVE the slackers.

The specials are old but they're the shit too.

listen to some real ska.

you can start with these guys:

A file of their tune "Skindhead Moonstomp" has been attached.

About skinhead culture:

"In addition to retaining many mod influences, early skinheads were very interested in Jamaican rude boy styles and culture, especially the music: ska, rocksteady, and early reggae (before the tempo slowed down and lyrics became focused on topics like black nationalism and Rastafarianism)"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skinhead

Know your history.

Also, don't forge to check out the following individuals:

Desmond Decker (Check out Moon Hop! 100% pure classic! Could be classified as the definition of pure ska.)
The Pioneers
The Skatalites
Derrick Morgan
The Pioneers
Toots & The Maytals

Fuck with the roots first. Feel free to move on up to the later generations of ska later. Posters here might not feel the above artists, considering the third wave was the most popular of all and therefore might agree with these artists instead:

Operation Ivy
Madness
Hepcat
The Pietasters
The Toasters
Voodoo Glowskulls
Save Ferris
Suicide Machines

Choking Victim
Leftover Crack
Citizen Fish

(these 3 bands are connected in one way or another)

Skankin' Pickle
Fishbone
Dancehall Crashers

There's a ton more, but those are the most popular. I don't know a whole lot about ska, but in highschool being in the punk rock scene, alot of kids I knew were into these bands. Op Ivy is ok, same for Madness and the Voodoo Glowskulls. The rest of the bands, eh... I guess if you're into ska/ska-punk they're good. Not for me tho.

This list should set you on the right path tho.

Ska and rocksteady, all the roots are good. But dub is where it's at! Sly & Robbie always have a special place in my lungs.

well, i was a skin in highschool, but more specifically, i was a SHARP. i was also an active member of the local ARA chapter from 1995-1999 until i moved.

it's like raves or something. everyone thinks the people who attend them are on drugs, whereas there are many people who don't use any drugs there and go just to dance or becuase they are fans of the music.

But dub is where it's at!

Dub IS where is it's at. Seriously.

Find as many works as you can by the following KINGS (in order of their rank, not their timeline):

King Tubby

A protege of legendary producer Duke Reid, King Tubby is the premier pioneer of what we refer today as the "remix". He was one of the first people, alongside Lee "Scratch" Perry, to begin working with multitracks on a mixing console and adding delay and reverb to certain portions of the mix such as guitars while taking the vocals for the most part out of the mix. He was also one of the first individuals on the planet to begin to build large sound systems.

His unforgettable and timeless versions of songs by artists like Augustus Pablo, Horace Andy and Johnny Clarke remain prevalent and influential in almost all forms of music to this day.

Lee "Scratch" Perry

Another protege, this time of the one like Sir "Coxsone" Dodd. Again, another producer who got his starts in the sound system field. This later led him to work with production on Dodd's mega-hitmaker label, Studio 1.

Beef between Perry and Dodd over money and abuse of power eventually led up to Perry's departure from Studio 1 and the formation of the group "The Upsetters". With his newfound success with his group, Perry took it upon himself to build his own studio, the legendary "Black Ark" in order to pursuit complete and total creative control as well as the ability to experiment to his heart's content.

Years of frustration was brought on by artists and fans alike begging for bread and freeloading at the Black Ark, along with the frequent violent visits from the police and the presence of the Niyabinghi Theocracy - a black supremacist group who believed in radical Rastafarian ideology. Their presence was enough to make Perry crack and in 1980 burned down the studio after being under all the pressure.

Scientist

and

Prince Jammy (later known as King Jammy)

Scientist and Prince Jammy were taught under the direction of King Tubby in the 1970's. Both released many albums under the labels Greensleeves and Trojan. They even collaborated on a few such as the classic "Big Showdown" and "Scientist and Jammy Strike Back!". These guys, using the latest and greatest in technology incorporated the old techniques using the new equipment creating a sound that some, such as myself, would refer to as a "refined and perfected version of the dub sounds of the 70's".

They worked more often than not with the Roots Radics, a Channel 1 session group orchestrated by superstar band leaders Sly & Robbie.

Of course, there's more, but I'm all tired of writing and trying to be creative and figuring out who the fuck did what. I'm hella tired.

Hope this helps out too, though.
