don't think you can forget it, but you can choose not to dwell on it, whatever it may be
if you notice the thought, recognize it's there but then focus your attention to something else

I've been trying to figure that out for months. If it really gets on my nerves, I go jogging or do some other activity to occupy my mind.

Meditation can teach a person to notice their thoughts without having to react emotionally to them. It's worth checking out.
