Great photographs Tonebone! Nice findings as well. The goo with yellow bits is reminescent of the old Orbitz drink. Is it actually a fungus?

Nice pics! I like the pearls on the puffballs. I saw some of those last week myself (Eugene area). The one you have as "Chantrelle?"... Doesn't look like it to me. Do you have a pic of the top of the mushie? The gills just don't look right...

I don't think it is. It looks more like fish eggs but it was on a rock one foot off the ground and six feet from a pond. Maybe they were frog eggs?

I know! It almost seems like a mutant chanterelle with no gills to me. Everything else: smell, texture, flesh seems like a chanty. I'm probably wrong but here's a couple other pics anyway

Great pictures, as always!!! If i may ask, what kind of camera do you use?
I'm pretty sure that is a chanterlle of some sort. Cantharellus lateritius often has no visible ridges on the fertile surface... or perhaps something similar that is unique to the west coast. Do they have that distinctive fruity smell you expect from chants?
Here are two comparison shots of cibarius and lateritius taken this summer... damn I miss finding these guys!!!

I use a Canon Powershot A540. 6mp, 4x optical zoom (which isn't all that useful when taking pics of mushrooms!). I think the focal length in the macro mode is 1.8-20 inches. I've switched to the larger file size to allow for some serious cropping. This was the best camera in the <$200 range that had full manual capability. Shutter, aperture, focus, flash power are all adjustable. I prefer not to use the flash when shooting shrooms though 'cause it seems to take away their natural color. I'd like to have something better but compared to the old 2mp kodak I had this thing is a mazerati! Thanks for the votes of confidence GeorgeM. Your pics are very pretty...what kind of camera do you use?

These two pictures are amazing. I really like the white mushrooms. The way you got the light to hit the caps is really beautiful.

Try covering the flash with something that absorbs about 80% of the light without changing its color much.

He uses a Canon PowerShot A630.

Yeah I use the a 630 like Alan said. I don't really care for the on board flash all that much, unless the mushrooms fall within a specific size range and the photo is composed just right. Anywhere from four to ten inches in height, with the camera positioned in such a manner the mushroom takes up much of the field, the built in flash is used on the lowest setting. It functions adequately in those situations, but just barely so.
For smaller and larger subjects I use an external flash which is triggered either manually or by a slave. If the exposure is relatively short (less than 1/2 second) a slave unit is employed as it's really frustrating to trigger it manually. Many of my pictures are three second exposures or longer, which is enough time to discharge the flash three of four times from three or four different angles.
On reason I exclusively use the flash is due to always getting a late start, my forays are almost always pushed to the wire. Walking through the woods in the dark carrying ten or more pounds of fragile mushrooms is always a blast... until someone gets hurt.
