The facts and myths of candy
    #7461096 - 09/27/07 04:55 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Sugar Myth: Sugar rots your teeth.

Sweet Truth: Sugar is just one culprit. Many foods, including starches like breads and cereals, and snack foods like chips and crackers, mix with bacteria in your mouth to form acids. These acids can dissolve tooth enamel, leading to tooth decay and cavities. You can help prevent this by brushing after meals and avoiding sweet or starchy snacks between meals.

If you don't brush your teeth, the bacteria, saliva and starchy, sugary food particles in your mouth form a sticky coating called plaque on your teeth and along your gum line. Plaque can harden after a day into tartar, which then has to be scraped off by your dentist. When plaque and tartar build up, they can infect the gums, bones and tissue that keep your teeth from falling out.

Sugar Myth: Sugar causes diabetes.

Sweet Truth: Diabetes is not triggered by eating too much sugar. Diabetes means the body can't make normal use of sugar, so it builds up in the blood. Symptoms include excessive thirst, urination, hunger and weight loss. There are two types of diabetes:

In type I diabetes, this inability to use and store sugar is caused by a lack of insulin. Insulin is a natural hormone that your body needs to convert sugar, starch and other foods into energy to keep you going. Type I diabetes is the more serious form of the disease, usually striking young people. Treatment involves taking daily injections of insulin.

In type II diabetes, you may have normal levels of insulin, but your body doesn't use it efficiently. Up to 90 percent of all diabetics have type II diabetes, which tends to occur in older, overweight adults. Treatment can include medication, but more often involves changes in lifestyle - such as following a healthy diet, exercising, watching your weight and reducing stress.

Sugar Myth: Sugar makes you fat.

Sweet Truth: The only thing that causes weight gain is consuming more calories in a day than you can burn off. Excess calories from any source - fats and proteins, as well as carbohydrates like sugar and starch - get stored over time as extra pounds of body fat. In fact, some nutrition experts note that people battling the bulge tend to overindulge in fatty foods rather than sugary treats.

Sugar Myth: Sugar turns kids hyperactive.

Sweet Truth: If kids act "wired" after gorging on candy, cake and ice cream, it's likely due to the stimulating environment in which the sweet snacks are consumed. Study after study has found no conclusive scientific evidence linking sugar intake with hyperactivity or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Some scientists suggest, however, that certain stimulants in sweet treats such as chocolate and soft drinks could increase kids' activity levels. For instance, a child drinking a can of cola gets roughly the same jolt of caffeine as an adult downing four cups of coffee.

CANDY SCIENCE FACTS

n Honey has an amazing doctor's bag of healing ingredients. It contains glucose oxidase, a substance that produces hydrogen peroxide, which kills bacteria chemically. Another skin healing substance in honey is propolis - something that bees make to fix their hive. So scars don't have a chance.

n You need one minute, 54 seconds to burn off a sugar cube while cross country skiing at a speed of 5 mph.

n What are some puckering ingredients? Citric acid gives you a short, quick shot of sour up front, malic acid gives you a lingering sour and funaric acid hangs in with the longest sour.

n Gummi candies are derived from gelatin. Gelatin is extracted from collagen in the collective tissue of animals - mostly pigs and cows. What parts? Their bones and skin.

n Each taste bud has anywhere from 50-150 taste receptors are sensitive to certain chemicals. So if these chemicals are dissolved in your mouth, off goes a signal to the brain. And your brain decides "Sweet" or "Bitter."

n Salt is important in processed meat products because it acts as a preservative. But sugar products are needed to counteract the salt's harshness and balance the taste.

n Flavor is a mix of taste, smell and sensations like hot or cold from the tongue and mouth. You have 10-20 million smell receptors that detect the smells that contribute to flavor. All these sensations tell our brains that an orange is definitely not an apple.

n Sugar is a natural food product so bacteria seek it out. Putting a little in garbage bags speeds up their breakdown in landfill sites.

Very interesting. Espescially the fact that candy alone doesn't make kids hyper - I've heard that so many times and never knew it was just a myth!

Sugar Myth: Sugar rots your teeth.

True. Most candy causes a prolonged contact between sugar and teeth. In addition to that most candy already is acidic.

Sugar Myth: Sugar causes diabetes.

True. If you overindulge on sugar for a long time you will develop insulin resistance, which is one of the major causes of heart disease, obesity and.. type 2 diabetes. Fat people who are fat by fat don't develop insulin resistance,m this is a sugar overconsumption thing. You don't have to be fat to get Diabetes II also.

Sugar Myth: Sugar turns kids hyperactive.

True. Sugar gives a big jolt of energy and kids tend to get active when they get jolts of energy. In addition to that there is no end to the reports on how candies and artificial colors, flavors etc are detrimental to hyperactive kids.

Sugar Myth: Sugar makes you fat.

True. People who have a tendency to get fat get fat fastest by carbohydrates. Sumo Wrestlers and factory farm livestock are put on a hydrocarbon-rich diet to fatten them. The glycemic index is often an indicator. Candy tends to have the highest glycemic index of foodstuffs, as their carbs are almost all sugar and their composition is almost all sugar.

You need one minute, 54 seconds to burn off a sugar cube while cross country skiing at a speed of 5 mph.

And how often are we country skiing? A person who is of average weight needs to walk for half a mile to burn off one sugar cube. Five grams of sugar, one piece of typical candy, means a young teen has to walk a mile to burn it off. And kids don't eat just one piece of candy, right?

Gummi candies are derived from gelatin. Gelatin is extracted from collagen in the collective tissue of animals - mostly pigs and cows. What parts? Their bones and skin.

Cow gelatin is a risk substance for BSE (mad cow disease) infection.

So there you have it :yesnod:

It does sound a bit like the kind of PR the oil companies, tobacco companies and the uranium industry puts out, giving a positive spin on something that isn't partticularly good

20 bucks says this was made by the sugar/candy industry

Facts, Refined Sugar:
- Is the leading cause of stress
- Increases blood sugar level
- Depletes all the B-Vitamins
- Leaches all the calcium from the hair, blood, bones and teeth (the chief reason for so much tooth decay in children is from the junk sugar foods). This is truly the second most deficient and toxic food on the face of the earth. Treat it as a poison!!
- Develops high blood cholesterol
- Causes arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
- Over stimulates the production of insulin and alkaline digestive juices
- Interferes with the absorption of protein, calcium and other minerals
- Retards the growth of valuable intestinal bacteria
- A major contribution factor to diabetes and it injures the pancreas in such a way that it malfunctions with the proper digestive juices and can't supply the insulin correctly--no energy--constant fatigue--it is not a pick-me-up, but a downer!
- Causes loss of memory

Eating too much protein also leaches calcium.

Here's the conclusion I have come to. Just eat a variety in moderation. You're not going to hear the truth from the major health associations and there are so many scientific studies that are manipulated by private enterprises, just like the government. Finding all the right info about correct nutrition is time consuming and unneccessary. Just eat complex carbs they are the best source of energy, not protein or simple sugars. Eat moderate amounts of protein and plenty of fruit and vegetables. It's as simple as that.

My parents hardly ever let me have refined sugars. They didn't like to let me eat sugary cereal or candy very much at all. Now I'm really thankful. I brush my teeth now but when I was a kid I hardly ever brushd my teeth at all. I have zero caveties and I am almost 23 years old.

this post is bullshit. it is biased propaganda.

those giant super gulps of slurpee from 7-11 are basically diabetes in a mug.

Once I read that sugar doesn't cause diabetes, I stopped reading any further.
