Park drunk threatened his own children

A DRUNKEN man abused his children in a park before threatening to drown his 18-month-old baby, a court was told.

Scott Hargreaves was described as "paralytic" by a witness in Queens Park, Blackburn, last Saturday, who said he had never seen anybody in such a state of drunkenness.

The witness said the three children were "clearly terrified" and told how at one stage Hargreaves threatened to "drown" his 18-month-old daughter, who was in her pram.

Hargreaves, 33, of Bromley Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour and possession of cannabis. He was remanded on bail for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Scott Ainge, prosecuting, said the witness had taken his son to Queens Park, Blackburn, on Saturday afternoon to play football when he saw Hargreaves with his three children.

"He was being abusive and threatening to the children and was clearly drunk," said Mr Ainge. "At one stage he fell over and got onto his hands and knees and began to crawl around.

"The child in the pram was distressed and the defendant crawled to the front of the pram and threatened to take her clothes off and drown her."

Mr Ainge said Hargreaves sat on the park wall and threatened to kill all his children and the witness described himself as being "totally disgusted" by what he had seen.

When the police arrived Hargreaves shouted: "I'm not drunk, I normally have 24 cans a day."

When police asked Hargreaves about the children he refused to say where they lived and said he couldn't remember how old they were.

They had to be taken to the police station where they were given chocolate and crisps.

"There was a bottle of pop in a bag in the pram but the children couldn't be given this because it contained alcohol," said Mr Ainge. "The bag also contained a piece of cannabis."

Liz Parker, defending, said Hargreaves had not been in trouble for seven years.

"He does have a problem with alcohol and has had three quarters of his liver removed," said Mrs Parker. "As he told the police he had not drunk for some time before this incident but he did have a relapse."
