you might check some shiitake pictures, and look how how far down the gills attach to the stem.

Shiitake and relatives will have jagged gill edges, it might be Pleurotus dryinus, it has veil tissue on the cap edges that looks like what is found on Veiled oyster.

yeah , why you thought shitakke i figure you grow this, but then no, maybe pleurotus dryinus seem a< good choice, levis also come to mind , and russula are micorrisic not saphofita . is no way they grow out of a log, have a nice day

I want to wrestle!!..... but i would likely lose, and I am a sore loser when it comes to challenges of physical strength. I find this is exacerbated by alcohol...
One time i took a nice chunk out of the palm of my middle finger joint while opening a beer with a lighter... my friend tried to take the lighter away and open it for me, but i could get it myself!!!... after a couple attempts and a bloody hand.

There are a few members of the Russulaceae that have indeed been known to fruit on wood, albeit this is a small minority. Lactarius vietus would be an example.

I'd guess either Hypsizygus ulmarius, the "Elm Oyster", or P. dryinus, as suggested.
