I think it's weird that everyone' saying it means to "take a shit" because the only uses I've ever heard it meant "to sit down", HOWEVER everytime I do hear it, the first thing that comes to mind is "take a shit" and I'm always like "What a fucked up expression!"

My theory is that it originally meant "to take a shit" and crude, vulgar people tried to adapt it to mean "to sit down"...I dunno, all I know is the only use I've ever heard it was "to sit down".

I've only heard it used for mostly females when they have to pee or sometimes males (males when they take a shit I guess?), when a toilet isn't around, and they just "pop a squat" somewhere...

I've always used "pop a squat" to mean sit down or make yourself at home. "Copping a squat" is how my grandpa says taking a shit however. They sound very alike when he doesn't have his teeth in.

Urban Dictionary says it means both:

Pop a Squat

:shrug:  Julia Roberts' hooker character in "Pretty Woman" uses it, presumably because it sounds coarse and vulgar.

That's the only way I've ever heard it used.

It's pretty disturbing to think that it can mean to sit, shit or piss.

Imagine you tell someone to pop a squat on your couch and they shit on it?

My guess is that it's always meant for a girl to pee and it's meaning has gotten skewed over time.

pop sounds to quick for a shit. Guys don't squat to pee. Squatting is not sitting, it's more akin to a crouch.

I wasn't referring to what what the waste does. lol I was referring to entirety of the whole act. It generally takes most people a bit longer to take a shit than a piss.
