"Squatting"
    #6388019 - 12/19/06 08:22 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

Imagine a big city. New York, LA, Atlanta...
Is it illegal to camp in the back of a truck? What about the people with tents? Will the law mess with a truck-bed and the occupants of the area? What sort of parking permit is needed to snore in the wide open air. ?

i always drive a bit out of town, maybe 2 hours towards the next show, and pass out in a walmart parking lot or rest area or whatever, in my car. sometimes squat camp, but i hate to be doing that when riding dirty. or split a hotel with a bunch of people. never tried staying overnight in any major city just in my car :ohwell:

So explain why it needs to be airtight, I was hoping you'd suffocate.

With solid edges I can be aware I'll have my wood sword in my right hand. it's a wide world, and I am spreading out, and I'll be just fine.

Ok, imagine a truck, but instead of an expensive $400 truck bed cover, a hand built one of tarps, blankets, duct tape, and twine. Just as good or better than a bought one, even with windows!

Would you like to be ass raped, robbed, or being beaten to near death?

I would imagine that those are the main reasons why it isn't quite a great idea to do that in a big city. You can factor in the laws later. Perhaps if you slept in a quiet suburb, then it would be much easier.

the thing that you non-city people do not understand is people in the city see all types of weird shit on a daily basis and learn to keep passing by. no one gives a shit what you do. the police are too busy to give a fuck. this is true unless you live in some dumb yuppie area, but the other 90% of the city no one gives a fuck about you.

you might be mugged, but not really if you stay in your truck.

you are more likely to get a parking ticket. you cannot just park a car wherever you like - you need a zone permit and you cannot get one of these unless you are resident. you can somehow get a temporary visitor permit, but that can be difficult.

I think you picked the wrong time of year to do that kind of shit. It gets mad cold in Atlanta this time of year.

just find a poor part of town where the only parking restrictions are street cleaning days (i'm talking residential area, like westlake in LA), and if you're so lucky as to find a spot that'll fit a truck, yer good to go! just watch out for the gangbangers (who really could give a shit, y'know?) and the fiesty bums. the slow bums won't fuck with you.

Wal-Mart has a no hassle ordinance, which means that you can sleep in your car, in their lot and they will leave you alone. That is, unless you act suspicious and shady, I'm sure. As long as you look crashed out, you are 100% safe. I have crashed out in them multiple times with no problems. Danksis and I sslept in 3 different Wal-Mart parking lots in this last summer. They are like rest areas with a fucking huge vending area.

Squatting camped out in a park is also an option, but probably only in the warm cities. No tent though, you got to stay low profile. Don't have bright colored things. out of site out of mind.

But yeah trucks are nice. No one will probably give a shit. Most don't for the most part.......

It's the city after all.

i've been told that sam waldon's daughter was raped in a highway rest-area, which is why walmart allows people to sleep in their cars in their parking lots. it's funny waking up in a really smelly car with a few other people, a few dogs, and a bunch of suburban moms staring in at you
