Any specific models that you can recommend buying or staying away from?Do these generally have a control to turn off the vaccuum component so you can use just the impulse sealing part to seal spawn bags?

Lares - The good type sealers use thick bags. Try to stay away from the ones that use the cheap, thin bags.Even the cheap ones ussally have a control to turn off the vaccuum component so you can use just the impulse sealing part to seal spawn bags.

I've been using my lungs as a vacuum sealer; Take the outer tube of a ballpoint pen, stick one end into bag, seal bag around end of pen and INHALE. Works pretty good, but like Psychonaut said, the quality of bag is the important thing. I've seen a couple of infomercials for sealers; One is like a small bicycle pump with these little black 'flaps' that you stick on whatever you want to suck. Seemed pretty cool, but ever since the Flowbie I can't buy anything --As Seen On TV--.

Hi Condi1, Thanks for the tips, from my research and from what people are telling me. The best vaccuum sealer that's out there is by a company called "Tilia" http://www.tilia.com They've got a good stong product but they are expensive and they do sell attachments for canning jars. If anyone besides me is interested in these, just go to http://www.ebay.com and do a search for "vaccuum sealer" or "tilia" and you should find a few. Thanks again!

How much of a vacuum will those sealers pull? In inches of water.

Hi again Condil First off, thanks for thinking of me;-)Secondly, I've seen those pumps before when Y2k was big. They're not worth it. For a good sealer money is an issue. But you do get what you pay for. With alot of vaccuum sealers they don't suck enough air out, or after a few uses the suction mechanism begins to leak. I think when I have more mushrooms to store I'm going to get a tilia brand sealer.

Hi Condil First off, thanks for thinking of me;-)And secondly, I saw a few pumps like that when Y2k was big...eh, I don't think they're worth $80. Granted you get what you pay for, so with that in mind, I heard that with some of the cheaper models. The suction starts to decline after a few uses. I somewhat believe that you get what you pay for, and since I really enjoy growing, I might get a tilia sometime in the future;-) I'm wondering now if you could vaccuum seal spores?

HI everyone;-) Again I was up late and saw an infomercial for tilia's "Compact 2" food saver vaccuum. One thing I missed the first time was that on the infomercial, they got a fresh fish and sealed it.Now they went on and on about how you wouldn't be able to smell it. "Hmmmmmmm" I said to myself. Transporting mushrooms isn't very difficult but to move things that have more of a scent to them....let say for example....herb! Weed really has an odor to it. Very easy to detect. Anyone ever use a vaccuum sealer to hold in not only the moist freshness but also the scent?????

Hi Condil:-) On that infomercial I saw, they had a part that showed how well the "Compact 2" worked with canning jars.WOW....it was neat. Do you know how when you open a jar of jelly you hear that little bit of suction? You hear it when you open cans too...well that thing vaccuums out that much air in normal canning jars. They were vaccuum sealing 1 quart jars that had soup, jars full of ceral, grain, flour, brown sugar...it was cool. From what I'm learning alot of these companies will sell you the sealer but then you've got to go back and buy their special plastic "sealer" bags. And they're expensive for bags. So it would definitely be worth having the capabilities to seal up any wide mouth jar. At the tilia web site you have to special order a sealer for regular sized canning jars:-) They only really sell a sealer for wide mouth jars. Just some more thought....
